Best/quickest route from Calais to Avignon
Discussion
Evening All,
Heading to the South of France this coming weekend, what's the best route to travel from Calais to Avignon, timings wise we're arriving into Calais at 20:25, I'm thinking 3 or 4hrs drive grab a hotel then complete the journey on Saturday.
Any tips/thoughts on which route where to stop off on the way down would be appreciated.
Thanks

if i were going in the wagon, for ease, i'd go reims, troyes, dijon, lyon, avignon.
all nice normally free flowing autoroute, but it is holiday time, so could be sticky in places at peak times.
plenty of places to stop on the way aswell, hotels can normally be seen from the motorway, formula 1 and the like if you want quick and simple.
cracking truckstop just off the motorway at "beaune" get a decent meal and i think there are hotels there to.
from calais, in the wagon at 55m.p.h beaune is about 7 ish hours, so prob 5 in a car
sorry just seen you only want to do 3 or 4 hours out of calais.
i'd still recomend the truckstop at beaune for brekkie on the saturday
just bear in mind, as its a major tourist route south for the scandinavians dutch and others, it will be busy, especially after dijon, past macon and onto lyon.

many thanks I think we'll aim for Beaune as our pit stop. all nice normally free flowing autoroute, but it is holiday time, so could be sticky in places at peak times.

cool.
if memory serves me right, as your getting near beaune the motorway may open upto3/4 lanes wide, as oppossed to the normal 2. think you'll spot a well lit area off to your right, should be where hotels, restaraunts and truckstop are.think the truckstop is an "arcotel" often signed from the motorway as centre routier.
