Just been speaking with a friend, who got chatting to a Swiss guy on holiday about cars and road trips, etc, etc.

The Swiss chap advised that the authorities have very recently changed their laws tightening up rules on "convoys" of cars travelling through Switzerland. Just looking on line, and thus far, I've found nothing.

Anyone aware of any changes or can perhaps point me in the right direction of where I might be able to find any details on these changes?

In any event, I'm fully aware of the need to take it somewhat easy in Switzerland anyway, but would be good to know what, if any, changes have been made.

Oh, this is sounds so Swiss, it must be true. After years of anti-car attention on previous road trips in Switzerland. This year we decided to skip Switzerland entirely (except for a quick incursion from Northern Italy) when planning our euro trip.

This.

Switzerland has become a complete ball ache to drive through. We have binned it altogether on our Euro Tour aswell. TBH i prefer Austria, all the German's head down there to have fun with their sporty machines.

More a change of policy rather than extensive changes of law, this has been brought about by a somewhat rigged referendum several years ago.

There is a name given to the changes, but the name escapes.

Basically a rolling programme to clamp down speeding, amount of driving in general, types of car/bike, etc etc in the name of road safety and environmentalism

Part of this programme was to target all folks driving through Switzerland, from HGVs' to convoys of bikes & cars, in order to push them to use non-Swiss routes. One of the arguements put forward to support this was lack of economic benefit to Switzerland itself, and cost of maintaining roads.

From Swiss transport policy point of view: objective achieved

I've always wondered how the authorities get away with such anti-car policies in a country where the actual Swiss themselves seem to love cars, driving fast and have more democracy than any other country

ps

Someone in the Swiss regional section might be able to give you more specific details of the policies and law changes

You should stay away from the autoroutes. However there are some AWESOME driving roads in the hills with no cameras or police :-)
