Sorry for yet another thread on Highlands trips.
Im plotting a route and wondered if anyone can give a bit of advice

Im going to Dunkeld for a few days then going to on a bit of a tour, so assume Dunkeld is my starting point.

IDEALLY I want to see Tongue (Stay overnight), Durness, Ullapool (stay), Isle of Skye and Isle of Harris (stay)

I was orginally thinking that i would go straight north from Dunkeld and head towards Durness and Tongue and stay up there a day or 2 then traverse south to try and take in Isle of Harris and also want to do Skye- not sure Ferry routes allow this?

or

should i just go immediately west from Dunkeld and go A9 to A86 heading towards fort Augustus / A87 to Dornie then to Skye (Portree or Uig) then the question is… do I need to traverse this route on the mainland= back to Dornie and then drive north or can I get a ferry over to Harris/ lewis ??? as I would really like to see the islands, then come back to Ullapool?

I would like to see Torridon and Applecross but guess I could pick these up when coming south at the end of the trip.

Im going up from 22nd to 5th and first few days will be doing Dunkeld.

Hi again wink

Don't quite understand your question, but if you go to calmac.co.uk you will find all ferry destinations/times to the Hebrides.

Uig - Harris is a much shorter/cheaper route by ferry.

Torridon/Applecross well worth the trip (but I would say that, wouldn't I)

hi

yes sorry the last time i looked at the calmac website i must have been struggling to understand their routes. Basically i thought there wasnt a ferry on the route i wanted so i was worried i would have to retrace some of the road back in order to continue north.

I think what i need to do is go from Uig, Skye to Tarbert, Lewis then drive north to Stornoway, Harris then go over from there to Ullapool. (or viceversa if i come from the North).

Is Applecross worth the drive? I assume its probably more fun to stay in Torridon than Applecross!

Applecross is fine drive... Just google it.
Applecross Inn is 'old world Inn' ..but fine. Torridon is new. Your choice

As you've discovered, you can go from Skye to Harris, then Lewis to Ullapool.

I'd suggest rather than staying for a night in Tongue and a night in Ullapool that you could try to arrange getting either the first or last ferry between Stornoway and Ullapool, depending on what direction you go. But if North to south then if you stay in Tongue then rather than stay in Ullapool (which isn't that far away you could arrange to get the last ferry that evening and stay the night in Stornoway.

Hope that makes sense.

As for heading away from Dunkeld, (if going north) rather than just taking the A9 to Inverness, you can head west (A923) to Blairgowrie, then the A93 north through Glenshee and Braemar, then take the A939 north towards Nairn, turning off on the B9090 back roads to Inverness.
The A9 north of Tain is reasonable, but there are other more interesting quieter options for getting to Tongue, unless you want to go to John O'Groats or Dornoch etc.
