Hi guys,

I’ll be driving up to the lakes on a Friday afternoon (first w/e in Sept) and can’t spend all day doing it but don’t fancy sitting on the m/way the whole way. I'm looking for some fun roads that won’t add too much to the journey time…

Any advice??

Anyone?

Currently looking at taking the M'way to Lichfield then taking the A515 (or alternatively taking the M1 to around Chesterfield) and over the Snake Pass. Any advice / good roads to aim for around that area?

No idea where I'll go from there... other than further North!

Snake's a great road but on a Friday afternoon you'll be frustrated in a long stream behind the 40mph brigade frown

I'd go M1-A50-A515-A537-M6 J19 which would take in the Cat and Fiddle (full of cameras nowadays but it's so twisty that it's not a major problem), and would also avoid the horrendous congestion around Glossop/Mottram area that you'd get stuck in if you went over the Snake.

Alternatively, if you're not in a rush and want some great upland roads.

A515 to Buxton
A6 to Chapel-en-le-Frith
Winnats Pass to Castleton
A6187/A6013 to Ladybower Reservoir
A57 towards Sheffield
Unclassified across Strines Moor to Midhopestones
A616/A628 to Woodhead Reservoir
A6024 across Holme Moss
Unclassified from Holme to the Ford Inn
A635 to Greenfield
A669/A62 to M60 J22
M60/M62/A56/A6068/A671/A59/A671 to Clitheroe
B6243 then unclassified to Dunsop Bridge
Across Trough of Bowland to Quernmore and Caton
A683 to M6 J34
