7 days to get to Monaco and back, including alp's roads....
Discussion
Guys,
I have 2 weeks leave coming up and want to spend 7 days of that leave in the 964 heading down to southern France.
I want good driving roads, so want to include some routes through the Alps. Problem is i'm also limited to just the 7 days, and don't want to be *too* rushed.
I would also like to loop around and include pushing over further west for the return, but I think to do that i'll be really pushing it with the amount of time I have.
Has anyone who has done a similar trip have a route plan to hand - or any suggestions to a good driving route, with nice country roads through the mountains?
Appreciate any tips!

When I did my road trip last year I spent 4 days getting down to the south of France & that included 2 days of motorway & then 2 days of fun driving through the Alps.
Have a read of the below thread, it is a collection of road trip write-ups including my own & should hopefully give you a few ideas.

I did a similar trip a few weeks back.
Ferry was at 6am, first night in Ludwigshafen (spelling?) in Germany.
2nd night in Stelvio, one of the hotels right at the top of the stelvio pass!
3rd night in Altdorf, switzerland having spent all day driving mountain passes.
then the following nights were in Monaco, trip was 7 days in total.
We drove the whole leg back from Provence in one go, the ferry was booked for 10pm so we left at 11am, we got to the ferry port at midnight having missed the ferry so had to go to the tunnel.
2 main bits of advice from me:
1, Don't book anything except a 1 way ferry outbound, this puts a much more relaxed atmosphere on the trip and means you wont have to panic about driving into the night just to reach a hotel, just stop when you feel like it and find a hotel.
2, Take out ADAC breakdown cover as it is a bargain at £69 and their cover is really good and invaluable.
Ironically I took out ADAC when I went to the Nurburgring for a week in my modified 205 GTI thinking it was bound to break down but it was fine, I actually needed to use the cover when I did the above trip in a modern BMW.

If I was driving to Monaco and back I probably would not leave France, or certainly wouldn't head far from France. (Apart from the bit where you drive into Monaco of course
.
That great big enormous area in central France, going over to the Alps and Alpes Maritme is possibly the world's largest playground of fantastic roads, and is easily and comfortably an 8 hour drive from Calais. You can pick completely different routes going there and back. Outside of peak season the great majority of roads will be near-deserted, whereas many of the well known routes can be tourist and camper-van hell.
Trying to suggest a route is difficult because there is just so much choice, but I'd say spend some time studying a good Michelin road map rather than using on-line services.
Annecy is an easy drive from Calais, and once there you have a huge selection of roads heading south, passing the highest mountains in Europe of course. It really is a terrific area.
You can shorten the autoroute legs by using the Vosges and Alsace, but really, there is simply no need to do any more than 8 hours of Autoroute getting to and from the most fantastic (and huge) area in which to drive in.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone, sorry have been away for last 5 days so wasn't able to get online in the meantime.
WIll look into all suggestions today.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a Michelin Map here as I'm in Dubai. so most of the planning will have to be done online until I get back to the Uk then I can fine tune it!
