in laws have just come back from Haggerston Castle, they said there's a load of road works on the A1 near the entrance.

They went 1 mile down the road one evening for something to eat and ended up doing a 10 mile detour due to north bound lane of the A1 was shut at night

Try the B6357 through Newcastleton to Jedburgh (or nearby) and any combination of the B or C class roads heading East, B6401 is decent, then onto the B6351 or B6353. Etc.

The B and C roads from Newcastleton are fun but can be quite narrow and slow. Depends how much 'progress' you want to make The A7 is quite flowing with good overtaking but there is a chance of mobile speed traps.

Whichever you decide you will have some fun

if I remember hearing correctly you cant check in at Haggerston till 4pm

I'd head to Alnwick and then the road out to Rothbury and then around to towards Holy Island
