if anyone is ever up in the aberdeen area, i suggest they take in this road:
leave aberdeen and head for alford. from alford go to bridge of alford then aim for the lecht ski centre and tomintoul.
on the way back from tomintoul, branch off to ballater. all these roads are simply stunning, virtually deserted. just watch in winter (ski season) when the local bobby sits at strathdon with his borrowed radar gun.

the road to the lecht is twisty in sections, open and fast in others, runs close to the river in places (stunning scenery). as you get close to lecht the rise up at cockbridge is stunning. (that's where Wogan's Mrs Mackay is based)

i've been all over scotland, south of france, but this road/route is still the best.

SHHH SHHH!! Quiet! If you tell everyone they'll all be on it.
Great road, part of my ideal drive:

Aberdeen
A96, off at Oyne fork
Over mountains, Kennethmont, Rhynie
Through Dufftown
Down to Tomintoul
Over to Ballater
South Deeside road all the way back to Aberdeen

Bliss.

i have to go up to aberdeen again in a couple of weeks from glasgow - what's the best route for good driving roads? i got bored with the road up through dundee perth etc, and there's far too many gatsos on it!

cheers

Go off at perth and go via glenshee and braemar then back to aberdeen on the south deeside road. It'll take a fair while but it's worth it.

usually takes me about twice as long going the scenic route. It's quite a hefty detour and the roads are lowewr average speed than the a90 too.
