Lake District - Cockermouth toward Lancaster????
Discussion
Evening all ,
I am sitting in a hotel room in Cockermouth waiting to collect my new car tomorrow morning. Rather than do the reverse run on the A66 then M6 that I did getting here I would like some nice and interesting driving roads back.
I'm going home to Hertfordshire so would like some interesting miles amongst the 300plus that lay ahead!
Cheers in advance,

Take the A5086 from cockermouth to the A595 , then follow the coast road to Ulverston, then A590 to M6 its a long drive but a great road (if quiet)
Alternatively take the A591 through Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere, Kendal, you won't get better scenery and the roads are great, but slow as there's always someone doing 30mph in a nsl and there are zero chances to overtake once into Grasmere almost all the way to Kendal
Or A66 to Penrith then A6 to Kendal over shap, 13 miles of flat out ultra fast road, if you are brave enough
Edited to add the A66 to penrith then take A592 over Kirkstone Pass to Windermere, then A591/M6 this is the route you should take if you've not been over it before, the scenery is jaw dropping, I'd forgotten to mention it and I live round here!
They are all good routes.

Tomorrow is decent weather so I would recommend taking the Lakes route via Crummock and Buttermere over Honister Pass into Borrowdale.....all stunning scenery. Then Keswick A66 turning right on A682 to Ullswater and over Kirkstone Pass to Windermere. IMO better driving and scenery is rarely experienced......

Except I think you have your road numbering a bit askew.

The A5091 joins it two thirds of the way along Ullswater.
To take in the whole of the lake you have to stay longer on the A66.
I know Lakeland quite well, especially Ennerdale, Crummock, and Buttermere.
Mrs RD's grandmother owned the 'big house' in Frizington.
When it was demolished she moved to the converted Stables.
Known to everyone in the family as the Dower House.
Being Grade II listed it became something of an albatross.
The person who it passed to was unable/unwilling to maintain it.
So it was left to rot. It's all a distant memory now.
Rheda Park became an upmarket housing development.
Returning from Buttermere via Honister meant having to go through Keswick.
At busy times we avoided it by going via Newlands Pass to Braithwaite.
Then over Whinlatter and past Loweswater.
Heading back to London was always via Hardknott and Wrynose.
