I drove this road for the first time at the weekend and it was fantastic - so great in fact, that I turned round and did it 3 times!

I'll be taking this route more often from now on!

Thanks for the warning, I'll keep an eye out.
I don't get up that way often now, but have family in the north west so it makes for a more exciting trip back from London!

If you think snake pass is good then get ye up to the highlands of Scotland.
I've lived up there on and off for the last 4 years and was distinctly underwhelmed by snake pass.

Never mind the police in unmarked cars, watch out for the weather! There only has to be a suggestion of snow or inclement weather and they shut the Snake Pass. It's quite a nice drive when it is open though ;-)
I understand that the roads up on the West Coast of Scotland are amazing- gonna take a trip up there in the Spring. eilder Forest is a nice drive too, although one of the most amazing sights i've evre had the priveledge of seeing was driving trough Yosemite National Park in the Spring a couple of years ago. They'd "cut" a road through the snow with a plough, and the snow was approxiamately 4 metres deep. Although to be fair the choice of car could have been better- a Lincoln Town Car with auto box, rear wheel drive, and blancmange suspension was "interesting"

Yes and the occasional mobile trap. Never seen a scaera van but have seen a few traffics with hand helds esp thru the 50 mph bit.

I used to regularly blast this bit of road back in the late 80's. My company Cavalier took some serious stick up there, boss never could work out what I did with my tyres that they had to be changed so often.

Came unstuck one day, headed back to Manchester and just past the squadron pub at some outrageous speed just getting it set up into a right hander alongside the reservoir and there is a bloke in the middle of the road waving his arms at me. Got into a bit of a tankslapper but stopped ok. The reason he stopped me was cos of a serious accident. White van head-on into Mini which was wedged up against a tree I went to see if I could help but I think there was nothing could be done for the lady in the Mini I will never forget that image nor will I ever drive too fast on public roads after that!

I've seen a talivan, on the climb up from Ladybower to Snake Inn, shortly after the restoration of NSL after the 50mph bit.'course I never speed so I was fine :tongueincheeksmiley:

parallel to it and as an interesting alternative, the woodhead pass can be fun and lovely views, if you're lucky and manage to time it so it isn't awash with hgv's lumbering along. overtake very, very cautiously - unless you're in a caterham or similar power/weight ratio!

used them both hundreds of times when i lived in sheffield and used manchester airport a couple of times each week.

winter was "interesting" especially in my little rwd mx5 - the old trick of winter driving came in very useful - loaded boot with bags of sad ... ;-)

enjoy!

Ohh I remember this road.

It was on this road I discovered the joy of driving 1 summer about 12 years ago I had only been driving a month or so and had got lost trying to find a b&b in the area returning from a rock concert in Sheffield about 1am. Anyway found said b&b but I didnt want to wake the owners to let me in so decided to go for a blast. Wonderfull moonlit night 0 traffic and 0 gatsos lots of corners just me the moon shining on the resevoir and my err Ford Orion. Oh well sweet memories the night I GOT driving.

Snake Pass is a good road, but some parts of the Tarmac are in a dreadful condition, so do be careful!

Mind you, Cat & Fiddle road utterly owns the Snake....

Used to do that one regularly at night, no other bugger mad enough to go up there.

Managed over the ton in my old cavalier on the straight bit past the C&F heading towards Buxton got a bit sticky heading over the ridge down towards that serious right hander at the end. Huge fun though!!

I love driving on the Snake, but have never seen any speed traps or owt...maybe I've just been lucky. Going over the top is great fun, although its always tempered by having to sit in a traffic jam through Glossop!
