Evening PH's

Going to be driving up to Whitby in the half term with the kids for a few days. Travelling from London is there any good roads to take on the way up there and whilst staying there?

Cheers

yes, lots. depending on what route you're taking, I generally come via Pickering, coming into town (from A64 direction) take a left at the roundabout then a right after the Co-op. Follow that road all the way to the A171...

but there are plenty of good, single track roads, not ideal for low cars in places, and plenty of bikes/ caravans at weekends and farmers during the week so take care on the blind bends!

Its also great for cycling if you're into that as the road surfaces are quite smooth.

Hutton-le-Hole to Castleton over Blakey Ridge is a better driving road over the Moors, just be very careful of sheep around the blind corners.

To avoid the A64 (which can be a nightmare at times, although this late in the season it may not be too bad...)

Take the M1 up to the M18, then take the M18 all the way to end. Then take the M62 east and come off at Howden. Here you take the A614 to Driffield, this is in parts a lovely fast A-road, some parts winding, some parts very long well sighted straights. Then at Driffield take the B1249 to Foxholes. From there you can pick up the A64 and either go west to pickup the Malton-Pickering (and onto Whitby) Road over the Moors, or head to Scarborough and take the coastal road to Whitby.

Then as mentioned, there are plenty of decent roads in the area for early morning hoons.

Thanks for all the replys I have taken in all the info. I will make sure I get up early one day and go for a blast down that Blakey Road.

Any suggestions on any places to visit with the family? Got two girls who are 8 and 6.

Hunters of Helmsley might be a good spot to obtain sandwiches.

Eat them with a view onto Rivaulx Abbey. They want and arm & leg from you to get into the premises. But the Abbay is as beautiful when viewed from the small road.

You could also park your car at Robin Hood's Bay and walk along the coast to Whitby, get some fish & chips (the seagulls are a plague) and bus back to Robin Hood's Bay. The walk would be 1,5 to 2 hours, is quite easy and beautiful. You end up at Whitby Abbay and then descend into the town.

Falling Foss Tea Room and Waterfall is a nice way to spend an hour or two.

There's also the steam train line from Whitby and as mentioned earlier, Helmsley is a nice place to stop off en-route.

If your kids have ever watched the Cbeebies series 'Old Jacks Boat' they may enjoy a trip to Staithes where it was filmed, which is a few miles north of Whitby. A little to the south of Staithes, (still North of Whitby) there's Runswick Bay which I often visit with my kids.

There's plenty to do in Whitby itself, go for a walk right to the end of the pier, walk up the 199 steps to the Abbey, also a ride on The North York Moors railway to Pickering is a must.

Only half an hours drive down the coast to Scarborough, the kids will love the seafront.

Probably too late now, but FWIW.

My sister lives near Brigg in North Lincolnshire. The 'obvious' motorway route is M1/M18/M180.
The problem is the M1 which is a monumental PITA - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I much prefer going A1/A1(M) to J17 then cross country - https://goo.gl/maps/XgNHQrKAiCG2
It's much less frantic/stressful and you have far more choices if you wish/need to stop en route.
After turning onto the B1178 just before RAF Waddington I hardly ever encounter any traffic.
The Humber Bridge toll is only £1.50 for a car. The link above takes you to Foxholes as mentioned by DCM.

Here now sat around a camp fire. This morning we left about 6:30 and got here around 12:30, we stopped for breakfast and was in no rush to get here. The route we took was M25/M1/M62/A614 and for large parts the traffic was ok.
