As I'm a new resident of south London I went out at the weekend in search of some decent roads, and whilst I've heard a few people on forums mention the A272 I was pretty underwhelmed by it.

I did however see a number of nice cars on the road (GT3, F12, 458) on Sunday morning - am I missing something? Is there a particular stretch of the A272 worth looking for? Or is a means to an end to get to something better?

I was on the section south of Crawley - do I need to head further west towards Midhurst & Petersfield etc. to make it a worthwhile drive?

If anyone is in the area - any other recommendations out there? Fully aware we're not inundated with fun roads in this corner of the UK but any gems would be welcomed.

depends really what car you drive and the type of roads that suit it & you.....
personally i think the a272 is over rated....the best bits are heading west of the a23....but in reality out past Pertersfield etc.....to me its a bit of a license teaser. If its empty the temptation to press on is great and its too well known by other car owners/bikers and inevitably those that wield lasers.....

You should find road off it that are worth exploring....cowfold to storrington, storrington to amberley etc.....like anywhere in thesouth east...if you time any of thegood roads wrong you'll be behind a 'boot fair' mob, horsebox or 'Fred' who is happy bumbling along to get his newspaper...

Thanks for the reply - I used to live nearer to Petersfield so all too aware of the roads on the way past South Harting down towards Chichester which are quite good.

I actually had more fun on roads, with decent corners, on the way to and from the A272... Will try out a couple of your suggestions and see what I can find out there.

On the plus side, the other half's parents live in the Cotswolds where roads are plentiful... Only issue being is last weekend it snowed like a bd on Saturday night and ended my plan for a Sunday morning drive!

Nearly all of the A272 east of the A24 at Bucks Barn is pants and not worth bothering with tbh.
On the rest of it you need to be lucky like I was around lunchtime last Sunday.
I had a clear run from Petworth to Wisborough Green. Nothing in front of me the whole way.

The other option at weekends is to get up early and be finished in time for breakfast.
Ideally around 08.30, after 09.00 traffic build up tends to negate the enjoyment.

Some other roads worth considering.
B2110 Lower Beeding to East Grinstead
B2133 Alfold Crossways to Ashington
B2135 from the A24 to the A283
B2139 Coolham to Storrington

Depends on what part of South London you're from.
There are some nice twisties in East Sussex and Kent.
Much closer than the A272 as well. smile

Thanks RD - I'm nearby to East Croydon so the Kent based stuff is probably the best bet.

I have no issue with being in the car at 6:30am on a Sunday to beat the worst of the traffic so will take a look at some of your recommendations, thanks again.

All of the B roads I mentioned are in West Sussex. YHPM.

I would say the fun starts at the end of the a272, when you arrive at Petworth and join the A285 to Chichester. It’s an amazing road but also one of the most dangerous, seen a brand new (dealer plated) RS6 on its roof at the bottom of the hill by Duncton!

Best bit is at the end of the road you basically end up at Goodwood Motor Circuit which is a good reason to visit!
