Kirkholm? I'm wondering if the OP means Kirkcolm on the Rhinns of Galloway peninsula. If so, he won't be on the A713.
It will be the A75 from Stranraer. Pick the wrong time and he will be mixing it with all the trucks off the ferry.
He could have a break by taking the A712 via Galloway Forest - https://goo.gl/maps/xupjUpvdUkz
Those are the only real options as far as Dumfries. After that it gets more interesting.
From the A75 at Dumfries take the A709 to the B7076 at Lockerbie. The latter is the reclassified former A74.
Super quick, hardly any traffic, no scamera vans or unmarked.

It finishes at Gretna Green - https://goo.gl/maps/ptkw1b8iJFy
From there head for Alston and Middleton-in-Teesdale - https://goo.gl/maps/ptkw1b8iJFy
After that, there are several choices.
Brough, Tan Hill, Buttertubs, Ribblehead - https://goo.gl/maps/N4F6mn7NHYQ2
Brough, Tan Hill, Buttertubs, Kidstones Bank - https://goo.gl/maps/WKd8VbQgek12
Brough. Tan Hill, Reeth, Leeming Bar - https://goo.gl/maps/C68c36EqQfE2
Barnard Castle, Stang Top, Reeth, Leeming Bar - https://goo.gl/maps/qZRMRDSfaF62
'Best' is subjective, plus it depends whether there are any time constraints.
Several gems in that selection though.

I was just threading my way through Google maps when the notification for this post came up. You've saved me some mouse dragging with that!It will be the A75 from Stranraer. Pick the wrong time and he will be mixing it with all the trucks off the ferry.

Yes, we'll be departing from Corswell near Kirkholm so you are correct in your assumption.
Thanks
