Suggestions for open top drive from Stresa to London?
Discussion
I need to return from Stresa on Lake Maggiore to London with my Alfa Spider S4 for its MOT. I'll be leaving on the morning of the 20th August. I have two or three days to do it and am under no pressure to complete the journey more quickly. I'll be travelling alone. I'll be leaving the hard top behind but will be travelling light so don't need to over-worry about overnight security.
The last time I did a similar trip, I avoided the autoroutes completely and kept off the RNs as much as possible and had a great time. However, I now generally spend as little time as possible, and no money at all, in France because of recent bad experiences with the police there, despite obeying the law to the letter. So, I don't intend to go through France, even though the Spider and, say, the Jura and Vosges would be
Tant pis, but I'm not spending money where I'm not welcome.
The basic trip is one I do regularly and I tend to do Switzerland-Germany-Lux-Belgium then drop down from Lille to the Eurotunnel. It's easiest to leave by the Simplon Pass, which could suggest another couple of great passes in Switzerland, or I can nip over to Locarno and get into Switzerland there.
What would PHers here suggest as a fun non-Autobahn route and stops back to Blighty, preferably with some nice twisty roads? I don't really drink, so beer or wine stops are not needed. Traditional food would be nice. I don't need luxury but a clean bed and good breakfast are essential. I can get by in German and speak French well.
I had pencilled in somewhere between Müllheim and Baden Baden as my first overnighter but I've overnighted in that area several times and would be very persuadable about other stops.
I've read the Roads section and there a some interesting thoughts there but nothing that quite hits the spot.
I'll be very grateful for your thoughts.

From the top of the Simplon you could turn right and head to the Grimsell Pass. From Locarno you could head towards Airolo and do the Gotthard and Sustens Passes. Either way you could then head north towards the N500 through the Black Forest towards Belgium.
Thanks. Any overnight stops you might recommend once in the Black Forest? We stayed here for a couple of nights once.

Thanks. Looks like it should serve the requisite quantities of pork and spuds, too!https://www.hofgut-sternen.de
