How long have you got? Personally I prefer the M4/M5/A38 option. I have travelled the A38 on M way closures at various points but it was a mare, I was usually in a van thhough.

Thanks - I was wondering if there were any good driving roads away from the motorways there ? Cheers

Sorry, not very helpful. You could try the Chedder gorge part at the very least.

Depends whereabouts in Devon you're going.

Roads to the south coast (Plymouth/Torquay) are fairly boring dual carriageway, but if you're heading to North Devon, you can come off the M5 somewhere around Taunton and then take the A39 which hugs the North Devon coast and is quite a nice route...

J. 24 Bridgewater, turn right from motorway then right at next roundabout. That's the 38 towards town then pick up the 39 to Minehead.
The A38 is always a headache.
