Just read an article that states 5 average speed cameras are being placed on what just might be the best driving road in South Wales, made famous by Top Gear amongst others.

A real sad day for me as I've taken a few cars over it in the past and it truly is spectacular, challenging and good fun, at a variety of speeds.

So a big fk you to the authorities that have done this.

It is a great, if short run, but hasn't really been one of the best roads since they put the 40's on it.

Too many people, overestimating their own abilities, especially bikers that began throwing themselves at the scenery unfortunately.

It sounds like the usual scourge of all good roads, loud bikers with loud and quick cars with thick owners poking holes in the shrubbery.
Stay within your abilities, do it quietly and don't spoil it for everyone else.

I'm sorry, I thought I was posting on PistonHeads. My wife must have been browsing on my phone and left the browser logged into her mumsnet account.

Never gone for a spirited drive on a good road? Never exceeded a speed limit?

The problem on the A4069 isn't speed in itself. It's inappropriate use of speed. I enjoyed that road when it was quiet and I kept my drives accident free. So take that "well done" and stick it up your sanctimonious hoop.

For some reason, we Brits are happy to have our freedoms squashed by the nanny state. I wish we were a bit more like the French and refused to put up with this kind of thing.

I'm not familiar with this Dingu character, is it normally known for trolling?

I used to use it on the long way home too. It didn't matter if you were behind a tourist or other slower moving vehicles because the views were always spectacular, even in the low cloud.

I won't bother going that way from now on, I'll stick to less well known routes.

Did it say when this was happening please?

Great road/views & seeing the Kites flying just above good to. Hopefully the mountain will be spared, if they can't get power there?

If you look at the picture in the news, the cameras are already there. They're not showing as live on the Go safe website as yet though. Worth keeping an eye on that to find out?

Ok, thank you. From the article, it looks like the Govt funds the installation (through Welsh Roads Safety Grant), then HM Treasury gets all the money back.

The French have had speed cameras in unmarked cars operated by private companies since 2018; they can nab you on the move too. Be careful what you wish for!

I used to use that road a lot and it was always a treat.

I personally wouldn't have a problem with the average cameras if the 60mph speed limit was reinstated (although they're still rather ugly things to put up in a very pretty part of the world), however using them to reinforce an inappropriately low speed limit is utterly cynical.

It's a cynical cash grab. Considering they are in the middle of nowhere I'm hoping they constantly get vandalised.

Wales is starting to take the piss for road users. The blanket 20mph zones, the 50mph sections on motorways/dual carriageways due to emissions (I'd like to see the science on this, I bet it causes more emissions) and now these cameras.

I’ve always thought that stupid long stretch on 50mph on the A470 for “Emissions” does that mean EV’s can do 70mph?

The latest rumour is that the WG are going to increase the size of the 50 zone from junc 32 all the way to Merthyr. I can't help but think that the current zone isn't really working and the air quality is staying at the same levels or getting worse, hence increasing the area? rather than thinking that reducing the speed limits to 50, just doesn't work??

Presumably they'll shut Port Talbot steelworks too- that'll improve air quality. Or is it only vehicle emissions that are a problem?

How about investing in transport infrastructure Wales, rather than regressive steps and seeking to curtail? Probably because it's not so easy and can't be done on a whim...
