The big giant TV screen things that seem to be popping up everywhere round me (Cardiff). One in particular is on the Ocean Way Roundabout facing you as you drive along the Eastern Bay Link Road and it is distracting at best during the daytime but having driven along there this evening in the dark it's downright dangerous. It's so bright that you struggle to see the traffic lights and when it switched to a white background I could barely see anything surrounding it as it was so much brighter than the surrounding area.

How are they legal? Surely they are a safety issue? This one has only been active a few days but already I've seen a slow speed rear-ender as the driver was looking at it and two times people just driving through a red light as it was near-impossible to pick up against the red picture. I work right next to it so pass it 2-3 times a day. Another one up by Asda Pentwyn is so bright the streetlights switch off if it shows a predominantly white advert!

Anyone else hate these things and spotted a dangerous one?

Theres a lethal one in Edinburgh on Salamander street in Leith. Its a long straight road that the sign board shines all the way down.

I’m in Cardiff and saw the new digital billboard on the roundabout by Asda Pentwyn. It’s a distraction and a half for drivers approaching a roundabout.

I don’t understand how the council grant permission for these billboards when they are increasing the risk of an accident.

There's loads around Birmingham/Walsall.

Worst one for me is the M5 north between J2 and J1 (around Oldbury), as I'm only every on that route late at night. It's very close to the motorway lanes (although it's mounted on the road below the motorway) and it'll go from a relatively dark ad to a bright one so quickly that you're almost blinded.

I think these s are the culprits...

Yeah those M5 ones are particularly annoying and dangerous. They really do take the piss out of the rules around adverts in motorways, amazed they were allowed in the first place.

I was surprised those ones on the M5 were legal. Been there more than long enough to have done something about them.

They're installing another one now by Morrison's down Cardiff Bay. Spoke to one of the contractors about it while at the petrol station and he said there are another 5 to go up around the city. He's had plenty of people commenting that they're horrible and a danger but he is just doing his job.

Surely these things can't just appear like this? Add in the energy use, light pollution and the distraction to drivers and there has to be a case for getting them removed? There is one on Eastgate House in Newport Toad that is so bright it drowns out the streetlights! The one that originally triggered me doing this post has had to be turned down at night as whenever there was a white background showing the traffic lights just disappeared, two crashes happened not long after the board was switched on so guessing that got something moving.

Cardiff as well (loads of us here, why is the south wales forum so quiet?). 2 more going up at culver, installer tonight put his car half on the roundabout half in the lane. No hazards, no beacons just a surprise when you came round. FFS…
