Does someone know a web site or a map of the limit-free roads in germany?
Is there special speedways where it is "reasonnably" safe to V max my car?
I red in EVO the A5 from franfurt to the south, but it seems crowded.
For those who already tried this exercice, is it better during the night or with daylight? Or from my stand point, are my lights good enough to see away at 150 mph? (IF I reach it?)
Thanks

Not sure where you can find a map...

We only used 3 autobahns recently:

The A96 from the lake Constanz area to Munich. This hasn't been finished yet, so there's lots of delimited stretches but also lots of limits - especially around junctions.

The A8 from Munich to Stuttgart is restricted apart from midnight-6am. Its very busy with goods vehicles, which are also banned from overtaking it each other for most of it's length

The A5 around the French border area is 3 lanes and derestricted

We only reached 130mph, which during the daytime when it's busier is fast enough!! Didn't try racing along at night time, but I can't believe it's too good an idea.

Obviously when it's wet, excercise caution!

Most of the autobahns.

Not that I know of. Germans just use the public highway for that kind of thing.

Timing is everything. Try it between midnite and 6am, although I usually manage about 130 mph during the day in lane 3, with faster traffic in lane 4.

Personal preference.

I prefer during the day, usually 6am to 9am Sunday mornings for a real top speed run, but sometimes it is surprising how fast one is travelling in traffic during the day.

Assuming your car is standard Euro or Japanese manufacturer, your lights will be up to the job.

The only real question is your ability. Doing 150 mph is only sensible if you are familiar up to about 120 mph with how your car drives.

If you haven't got the 120 mph experience, 150 mph will be totally out of your league and you will be a danger to yourself and others.

My advice is to get plenty of practice [ like thousands of miles ] in at slower speeds before trying for 150 mph.

"The only real question is your ability. Doing 150 mph is only sensible if you are familiar up to about 120 mph with how your car drives."

In Belgium, with increasing speed limit controls, I do not try V max because, I don't want to loose my licence for a few minuts of limited thrill. With my Volvo, I am experienced with sustained 125 mph trip. But not with the elise. During track days, this speed is frequent but not for long time (a few hundred meters). The straighs on the track I did so far where too short to V max the elise. Having choosen the elise means I am not a huge fan of max speed on straight but I use to check the ability of my car as a way to use it totaly...

Thanks for the info. Another question: do you believe I should try the nurburgring to get the straigh or is it safer on the autobahn?

An Elise 111 R ?

I don't know the model, but Evo magazine says that of four different versions of the Elise, the fastest only does 135 mph.

So 150 mph looks a bit out of your range, unless the 111R has a lot more power than the rest.

Added to that, Loti are built for going round corners, not going flat out. Expect the ride to be atrocious, and for the car to feel like it is about to drop to bits or explode.

See above advice. Now you've told me what car you are trying to get to 150 mph, that's put a totally different opinion on it.

The 111R's max speed is well 150 mph according to evo magazine. My highest speed so far is 143 on the speedo (should be around 130-135 in real) and the car was very stable. I stopped to accelerate due to the traffic and felt that some power was still available ounder the foot and on the tachymeter. Will see with the GPS next time.

The best limit free road I know, is Ramsey to Douglas, on the Isle of Man.

The A5 is generally clear on Sunday mornings.
