Hi All,

Want some advice on where to stay in Wales for a long weekend of driving and eating/drinking.

I want to take my girlfriend to a nice hotel where we can wine and dine in a bit of style in the evenings but have access to some good roads during the day.

All suggestions appreciated!

Ta in advance,
Michael McDowell

Ps never I've really been to Wales before.

If you're looking at south/west wales, I can recommend this place:

www.s-h-systems.co.uk/hotels/cwmtwrch.html

I grew up near there, and worked part time in the restaurant at the four seasons - top food, and lovely setting.

The main roads around are well watched nowadays, but heading north up the B4310 (map on that web page) will take you past where I used to live and into the Brechfa forest, where they do the Rallying. Fantastic area, up into the valleys and along the rivers!

Tricky. Depends where you want to go. Lots of good roads.
Anyhow, Hotels
Seiont manor hotel near Caernarfon, very nice

Trearddur Bay on Anglesey, stunning views on the sea facing rooms.

Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel on the A470 just north of Merthyr Tydfil, not stayed there but told its very nice.

Golfa Hotel just outside Welshpool on the A458 west bound, very quite and excellent menu.

All within reach of good roads and runs.

One of my favourite roads in North Wales is the A4212, heading North out of Bala. It's got great bends, some good straights, fantastic scenery, it's just a shame it's not longer!

Hi Guys,

Just got back! Cooked my brakes completely.

Drove BigTone suggested B4310 and stayed at JMorgans Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel. Both excellent!

Did'nt get up as far north as I'd have liked to so have not as yet driven BarryG's A4212.

Any way thanks for the advice.

Later,
Michael McDowell

Ps I'd now reccomend the A4069 through the Black Mountains - just stunning!

PPS Had dinner and stayed the last nite at Llangoed Hall on the A470 where I parked between the Maserati and the couple who flew in for afternoon teas' helicoptor!

Just back from a cracking week-end in South Wales. Stayed at the Nant Ddu hotel, just north of Merthyr - they've just opened their leisure complex - pool, jacuzzi, gym, saunarium - great little place - and the food's good as well. The road north to Brecon is stunning and there's a great road-side tea wagon half-way where all the bikers congregate. Apparently the road north of Brecon gets better still!
I'm going back again soon.

there are some unbelievably good roads

i normally like to wiggle the tail as I pass the t-wagon for a jape.

back towards merthyr there is a left hand turn off to neath which is the most unbelieable road

even better is the mountain road from brecon to upper chapel

even better again is the mountain road near rhydarr

but the best by some margin is the 6049 Brynaman road over the mountains, its an ex RAC rally mountain stage and is best fun travelling west from the A40 towards Brynaman

Bit further down from there is a site for traps. Just as you come out of the twisty bits and the straight comes to view. And in the weekday there is a bacon butty bar to die for just before Libanus. Proper sausages in the breakfast bap
