We are off to Carlisle for a few days driving, to have a play in my new Elise, so where do you all suggest for good roads? Also any suggestions for things to do in the Lake District? Can`t drive all the time, you know!

Many thanks
Nathan

Walk up big hills? That's what Mrs Yrth and I do anyway (when not driving).
As for where to drive? You have to do Wrynose and Hardknott passes, great fun.

Head over the A68 towards Newcastle and take a right when you see signposts for Alston. This road is brilliant. Once you're through Alston, you're heading up the Hartside pass which is widely considered one of the best roads on the UK. You'll end up in Penrith if you follow the road the whole way, where you can either turn around and do it all again or blast back up the M6 if you're pushed for time.

Hardknott pass would be nasty in a sports car but the views are great

Down the side of Ullswater, then over Kirkstone pass / the Struggle to Ambleside, then twisty roads to the Drunken Duck at Hawkshead, then west over Hardknott. And then look in the phone book for garages who might have replacement brake pads
