Hi

The roads on the Route Napolean are not too narrow and have plenty of opportunity for passing slower cars but this way will, I'm afraid, add lots of time to the journey! You'll average 40mph-odd as the villages and the scenery slow you down whereas the motorways are an easy double that!

But the route is UNMISSABLE in any South of France roadtrip and to rush it would be a terrible shame! See if you can't add an extra day en-route and stay somewhere round there; its really that good!

Here - don't just believe me ...

me too! i am definately doing this route in August - booked my holidays already! also read that there are some spectacular gorges around there which are well worth experiencing...the plan for me is to end up in Nice or Monte Carlo (or both!)

there is also a website for the route napoleon, i think a simple search will reveal it!

Yep, got to agree! The Route Napoleon is totally un-missable on a road-trip to the South of France - done it loads of times , on bikes and in various TVR's. The road offers soooooooo many opportunities to 'play' and is scattered with many pretty villages for looong lunch-stops!
The best gorge that I've come across is the Gorge de Verdun, which is at the Southern end near to Grasse and offers spectacular scenery. ENJOY!

aaaargh be careful. I did the Route Napoleon last August - It is a truly wonderful road with fabulous scenery...BUT the whole of Europe uses it in August and the traffic is absolutely horrendous. It took me 6 hours to cover one 40Kilometre stretch....

One of the worlds great roads, but probably best experienced outside of August.

I endorse everything said about the Route Napoleon and the Gorge de Verdon, just watch out for the locals on their superbikes. Those guys are fast.

I drove the Route Napoleon last September in the Chimaera and it was awesome!

I've got a few pictures but they don't really do the road justice...

Start here and go through the next 9 pictures.

We're doing it in September, when the French holidays have finished, but the weather is still good.

Really looking forward to it

I know what you mean - did a large chunk of the RN last summer, and not one single pic to show for it

Have just returned from Corsica and did from Grasse to Grenoble on the RN. Stayed overnight at Sisteron. Fabulous road, scenery and old French villages. No cameras and no police. A must do for anyone driving in South of France.

I rode the Route Napoleon a few years ago on the bike and it was the best days ride I had on the trip. It's not to be missed!
