I'm trying to plan a UK based road trip with my friends taking in some of the best roads etc. Want it to last about 7 days or so starting from Surrey area, I was hoping that someone could suggest some good places to visit or roads to take?

Try planning your route using this Google map, then see if you pass by anything interesting highlighted. You can then click and drag the route to overlap the highlighted roads, and if you're even keener there are ways to download the Google itinery to a TomTom or Garmin satnav.

Lands End and back? I was going to do that one last year. The basic plan was to take quite a diret route to the north of England and then head onto the quieter roads from their.

If time permitted, you could do something like head to Wales, drive up through Snowdonia, then across to the Lake District and up into Scotland towards the Highlands.

I'd say something like:

Day 1 - Head over to Snowdonia (look up the Evo triangle thread to find some of the roads you should be trying).
Day 2 - An hour or two in Wales and then head up to the Lakes and take in the Harknott, Wrynose, Kirkstone and Honnister passes.
Day 3 - Penrith to Alston on the A686 then drop down into Stanhope and onto Derwent and onto the A68. You could stay somewhere around Kielder.
Day 4 - Head roughly NW taking in the A701 and end up at Moffat then head North via Glasgow and Loch Lomond up to somwhere like Crainlarich.
Day 5 - Up through Glen Coe and Fort William and onto Mallaig and then get the Ferry to Skye, and drive up to the bridge and cross back to Lochailsh (if you've got time, a quick loop around the North of the island is well worth it) and then drive up to Applecross and stay there.
Day 6 - Applecross pass (can;t remember the road name, look it up on here, its worth it!) and then head over to the east side of Scotland via. Loch Ness and then head down to Edinburgh and onto Newcastle via. either the A697 or the A68.
Day 7 - Head home, if you have the time take in either some of the N.York Moores or the Hawes - Ingleton Road.

You could probably sqeeze day's 1,2 and 3 into two days which would buy you more time on the West Coast of Scotland.

Wow thats certainly an itinerary for a weeks driving, I think that I would have to make it more...driveable if you know what I mean. Going to have to take it fairly affordable places to stay, friends are suggesting sleeping in the cars and as much as I love them I think that is a little too far!!

Thank you for all the great ideas guys.

I was thinking something like driving to the West coast line for the first day and then going from there, it would take in some pretty good county roads but the main problem with this being the first time is that I don't actually know which where to go. I guess thats usually the way with 1st times lol!

I was just thinking that same thing! I'm going to look into ferry routes for the Isle of Man, may be able to arrive at one end then get another ferry north at the other...

This is easy.

Drive to Scotland.

Stay there for 5 days.

Drive back.

If you want some routes, let me know.

We've decide on a route from home, then to Cardiff, up through the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, up to the Cambrian Mountains, across to Anglesea and around the coast to Liverpool. We were going to go to the Isle of Man but the ferry is too much money for the amount of time to spend there. Probably head further north to Lake distict and back through the Peak distric as well.

You'll have a great time, particularly in North Wales. I wouldn't worry too much about the Lakes if you're just after good driving. It tends to be pretty busy and the more spectacular roads aren't great driving roads. I think you mad not to go up to the West Coast of Scotland though. Its a must do!

I think that for this trip, Scotland is a little too far to go. I used to go on holiday there with my family every year to a place called Loch Caolisport near to Lochgilphead, some great roads around that area but alas I was but a young'un and too small to drive lol, wanted to go back up this year but decided to do Wales 1st.

I always fancied doing the Welsh coast to coast. You can drive from the seafront at cardiff to the seafront at Llandudno on just one road, the A470.

Yeah I did look at the coast but thought the mountains would be good. Going to do the coast of Anglesea and then the North coast of Wales where there looks like there are some nice beaches, on the 4th day. Easy day.

You could have a razz round the new Anglesey track as well whilst you're there
