Hello all. A friend and I will soon have a day to spare and the use of a nice car. We’re heading up to Lancaster which we’ll be using as a base. We intend to head up North to try and find some nice driving roads.

Can anybody recommend any interesting routes, up to a maximum of say 140 mile round trip from and back to Lancaster.

Regards

Rob

Have a look at the Lake Windermere thread just below. You might want to try elsewhere, or take an alarm clock. Have a read, you will understand.

Having read that thread, I'm now thinking that it may be a better idea to head East from Lancaster. Same question then, which roads?

Many thanks

Try heading south on the A6 out of Lancaster, you will see turnings to the left (take your pick)leading under the M6 & out into the forest of Bowland. Some good roads here, climbing through some deserted hillsides. As Bowland sits on the doorstep of both the Lakes & York Dales they take the bulk of the tourist traffic. Aim for Slaidburn where you can turn north towards Long Preston and from there head to Settle & on to Hawes (which I guess you have already read about- well worth a drive). Have a look on a map see what you think.

Try the A683 straight out of North East Lancaster, head up to Kirkby Lonsdale, continue north on the A683 through Sedburgh, at the end of that road turn right onto A685 through Kirkby Stephen to Brough, at Brough take the B6276 to Middleton In Teesdale, turn left onto the B6277 towards Alston, Left at Alston onto the A686 towards Penrith, then A6 south through Shap to Kendal, A591 south towards the M6, over the M6 Jcn 36 onto the A65 for about 100 yards, turn right at roundabout onto the A6070, then join A6 south just north of Carnforth and head into the centre of Lancaster.

This is a stunning route, without too much traffic, very little HGV use.

PLEASE BE SAFE!

If you were to set off on the route I describe above, the best place would be The Highland Drove, which is about 2 or 3 minutes off the A686 between Alston and Penrith.

I used to work in Cumbria, and the most entertaining roads would be thus: - get on the A683 to Kirkby Lonsdale, turn down the A65 to Ingleton. From Ingleton, head north to Hawes on the B6255 (one of THE best driving roads ever). At Hawes, turn 1st left, then turn right to Hardraw. Drive throw Hardraw, then turn left towards Simonstone/Thwaite and over the Buttertubs Pass. This is spectacular - a true winding mountain road with jaw dropping views. At Thwaite, turn left towards Keld (B6270), and continue untill the "Tan Hill Inn" sign. Turn right, and follow this road to the Tan Hill Inn - Englands highest pub, which serves great food and a great pint of Old Peculiar. From here, take the road you came on to get back to the B6270, and head for Kirkby Stephen. At Kirkby Stephen, take the A685 to Brough, then the A66 to Penrith. At Penrith, take the A686 to Haydon Bridge, through Gilderdale Forest, then left onto the A69 to Carlisle. From here, take the M6 or A6 back to Lancaster.

You'll love that route!

Well, two beautiful days, one amazing Lotus Elise 111R and the roads given above, with a bit of the North Lakes and North Yorkshire Moors thrown in. I want a 111R and need to move to Cumbria.

Why people travel abroad when we have roads like these!!

Many thanks for the suggestions, we tried them all, more than once!! When I work out how to post on Youtube I'll put the videos we did on there.

Once again, many thanks for the suggestions, we had two unbelievable days!!

I'm dragging up an old thread here but with good reason!

I've just come back from a trip to the Lake District in my 2006 Fiesta ST150 and had the intention of driving some great roads whilst there. As such I searched this forum for tips, copying and pasting posts onto a word document so I could chose what to drive when there.

The route quoted above was awesome and I thank you Sir for posting it back in 2008, assuming you still frequent this forum.

Some piccies to show it's awesomeness - I wish I had a Go Pro now:

A686

Buttertubs Pass

A592 up from Brother's Water

Not quite as you miss out the A686 - possibly the best road on the route!

For anyone looking at a Lakes run this is a good little route taking in most of the highlights.

To/from the Shell in Lancaster, 138 miles door-to-door... http://goo.gl/smDZvn

If you had a bit more time or wanted to make it a little longer the Buttermere/Honister Pass loop is a good one to add.
