Two routes from experience:

1. Quick. Calais - Reims - Strasbourg - Basle - Bellinzona - Milan - Monza. Two days with an overnight near Saverne.

2. Scenic. Calais - Liege - Luxembourg - Nancy - Freiburg - Langenfeld - Merano - Bolzano - Verona - Monza. Three days overnighting in Nancy hehe and Langenfeld.

PM me for more details.

If no one else wants to jump in............

Besancon - Pontarlier - Lausanne - Montreux - Martigny - Sion - Sierre - Visp - Glis - Gondo - Varso - Domodossola - (detour by the lakeside to) Stresa (and get a 5 min boat ride to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borromean_Islands) - and on to Monza

Between Glis and Gondo you'll go over the Simplon Pass, the rail route for the Orient Express. Basically the route is spectacular through the lowland French Alps from Besancon, all the way to Italy. The roads are flowing and uncrowded all the way to Switzerland where you'll cross the Alps into northern Italy. Lake Maggiore and surrounding is as spectacular and beautiful as anywhere too. It's all different and stunning in varying degrees.

If you manage any of it, please let us know if you enjoyed the recommendations.

Enjoy. And by the way, I've done Monza. It was the first year Schumacher was in the Ferrari. I heard 250,000 turned up. Don't know if it's true, but it was impossible to see the race on the back straight just before the Parabolica. The cars were just a blur between heads. You couldn't tell which driver, just team. The atmosphere was superb. Saturday night makes Silverstone look like a Church Wardens convention. Best I can tell you, it was like going to a rave. A Formula 1 rave all be it. Take loads of money. Souvenir stalls, food, drink, it's like a fairground too!
