Driving to Como in August (4 cars), first stop just outside Metz (Friday-1st day). Want to do Stelvio (3rd day), then head towards Como (meet the wives). Can anybody recommend route, so I am able to do Stelvio in the early morning on 3rd day (need town to stay in on 2nd night). Or am I getting to hung-up on the Stelvio pass, are there better routes that make sense, so I end up in Como on the 3rd day. thx in advance....

head for davos for the overnight stop.
we stayed here:

next morning head east to zernez and on toward stelvio ... turn right before stelvio and take the umbrail pass to the top .... from stelvio you may head south to bormio (tight, unlit tunnels) or head down (preferred) the north/east side of stevio, "do" a loop and head back to zernez.
head due south from zernez to como via st moritz.

thanks very much for all that - still got the 996 - but the corvette thats coming along also, should be interesting.
