You can't fail to find good roads out of Hexham. Particularly good are the following:

A686 Haydon Bridge to Penrith
B6306 Hexham to Edmunbyers via Blanchland (very good pub at Blanchland) and continue on the B6278 to Stanhope and beyond to Middleton-in-Teesdale
B6318 military road
B6309 Stocksfield to Stamfordham

There's a great loop on your doorstep: head south out of Hexham on the B6306 to Blanchland and Edmundbyers and pick up the B6278 continuing south through Stanhope and on to Eggleston. Here, cut across to Middleton and take the B6277 up to Alston. 60 miles of absolute heaven.

I haven't done the return leg on the A686 to Hayden Bridge but it does come recommended. Taking the A686 the other way out of Alston, towards Penrith, is a giggle for its hairpins but probably not worth going further than Melmerby that way.

Enjoy.

Be aware there's plenty of marked/unmarked police on the A686 with the appropriate equipment etc.

Some cracking suggestions already BTW thumbup
