I am having a run down to Abergavenny to see some family this friday. I am going to use the SEARCH function profusly this week looking for roads to go out and about on, but time is a factor so i won't make it up to the triangle unfortunatly... Can i pull on your wisdom ladies and gents and ask..... Good driving roads... suggestions please! I reckon i might be able to sneek 3-4hrs max, so has to be fairly local. I know the police are militant in south wales so something nice and quiet. I want something faily challenging as i have just tweeked the CTR, but not super hardcore as i have seen from some of the pictures posted! eek Any decent suggestions gratefully welcomed. Kind regards

There are 2 B roads running east out of Abergavenny that are good fun. But a must do is the B4560 from Llangyndir to Beaufort.

If you're happy to go as far as Brecon there is a B road that goes from Brecon to Builth Wells that is just amazing.

[pedant]A4069 goes over The Black Mountains. A4059 goes through the Beacons[/pedant]

Both excellent roads, though!

If you have some spare time, head off from Aber on the A40 West (should be signposted Swansea or Llandovery or Brecon). Keep on the A40, past Brecon, until you get to Maescar and keep a sharp eye out for a left on to the A4215 / A4067. Keep following the A4067 to Abercraf, then hang a left and head towards Banwen, and from there follow the signs for the A465 / Glynneath. Once in Glynneath, follow the signs for Merthyr (A465), and at the next island, turn left on to the A4059. Over the moors to the T-junction, then turn left on to the A470 towards Brecon. Next island, 3rd exit. Next island, follow signs for Abergavenny.

Happy f!cking days.

Take a trip up to Aberystwyth - Through the Elan Valley over the Beacons first. Spectacular views and roads around the reservoirs.

You have the opportunity to see some epic sights, given a free morning/afternoon.

Head out of Abergavenny on the A40 (towards Crickhowell).
Then, the B4558 to Llangynidir, then to Talbont (via a couple of sleepy villages), then rejoin the A40 just outside Brecon.
From here, aiming for the B4520/4519 north towards Builth Wells and then Llandrindod Wells will offer some epic views of the Brecon Beacons scenery - while being a none-too-shabby road to drive.
From Llandrindod,
Then, hop onto the A470 back down to Llyswen (might not be spelled right), then the A479 back to Crickhowell and the A40 back to where you started in Abergavenny.

Be aware, some of the higher roads can be a bit poorly maintained (in terms of surface/crash barriers etc.), so winter probably isn't the best time to be extracting that last percent of grip...

Other than that, have a ball - I'm insanely jealous, it's been years since I drove in that neck of the woods.

One of my all-time favourite roads - if heading south you can get some lovely sideways action in the first hairpin, it's well-sighted and relatively slow, so pretty safe (I think evo do or did some of their powerslide shots there).

Evo regularly road test on the B4560.

Great route driven all those roads at various times, the only extra one I would try and include is the Brecon to Builth Wells B road over the army range.

Well ladies and gents. I just got back and did 170miles of driving around. Bloody fantastic! I have taken some photos and i will post them up Sunday night. Thankyou so much for your suggestions. I did them all! My brother in law was a great wing man. It was bloody icey in places but i got back in one peice with only one little scare! (Tractor with death spikes mounted to the front!) The civic proved to be a able weapon! The lower torque was a benefit in these conditions, really had the engine singing, spent most of the day between 7-9k!

Again, my thanks.

(oh and i got a classic EVO photo, i think most will recognise it!)
