I've been over Buttertubs Pass a few times recently, taking the long way back to Edinburgh from Leeds (very long way). I have to say I was rather disappointed (although I should point out I was in completely the wrong type of car: a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC).
The scenery is spectacular, but the driving is not so good. Unless you have a rally-special Subaru/Mitsubishi job, you may find these roads a too narrow, too bumpy and, well, just too slow: there is none of the smooth, wide and fast sweepers you find for instance between Penrith, Alston and Haydon Bridge or around Middleton in Teesdale. Rather, these are the most minor of minor routes.
The route I took was Leeds to Bolton Abbey (boring suburban mostly), Bolton Abbey to Kettlewell (challenging), then Hubberholme to Hawes over Fleet Moss (stunning but slow, narrow and bumpy), Hawes to Thwaite (Buttertubs Pass), Thwaite to Kirkby Stephen (again, stunning but really difficult), then to Middleton-in-Teesdale, Stanhope, Alston, Brampton, Longtown (the absolute highlight, great driving roads and good landscapes). From there I went A74(M) to Moffat (heavily policed) then A701 Devil's Beeftub Road to Edinburgh (again, wonderful motoring).
I knackered the suspension on the SEC!

While you're in the area, I highly recommend "BEGGARMANS ROAD" out of Gayle to Hubberholme, video here from Hubberholme - Gayle. See for yourself:

Aww, don't go and tell everyone, I like that run too, but not many people go over that way!A circular route I do from Leyburn goes something like this:
Leyburn - Reeth - Tan Hill - Keld - Buttertubs - Hawes - Gayle - Hubberholme - Buckden - Kettlewell - Park Rash (Coverdale) - Middleham - Leyburn

It is a good one, but I thought no one knew aboutLeyburn - Reeth - Tan Hill - Keld - Buttertubs - Hawes - Gayle - Hubberholme - Buckden - Kettlewell - Park Rash (Coverdale) - Middleham - Leyburn
Coverdale.
I also recommend the Kilsney Crag [ good shop there],
NW to Halton Gill, SW to Stainforth, E to Malham Tarn,
E to Arncliffe & back to Kilnsey.
Anywhere from Grassington to Aysgarth is worth a look
- just avoid main tourist season and the bus loads of
kids at Malham Tarn.

Love the fact that in 8 minutes of driving, the only other vehicles on the road were a tractor, a clio and a van and a parked mini.Weather looked okay as well, so guessing wasn't filmed in hte depths of winter. Definitely a road to explore at some stage.http://www.scoobysmacs.co.uk/Videos/buttertubs%202...
