Hi all.

I'm thinking about organising an extended weekend in mainland Europe, this year. Reading loads of posts on here, there are some amazing roads to drive in Europe, but, they all seem to be down near the Alps, Italy, etc.

What I don't want to do (due to budget restrictions by some of my friends) is drive down that far, I was thinking of doing a drive around the North-East of France and into Belgium, or somewhere in that (ish) area.

Does anyone know of any good roads in Northern Europe? I know that's a daft question, because of Germany or Austria, but perhaps keeping to France/Belgium/Closeby?

Otherwise I guess, where are the nearest great roads? smile

Thanks!

I remember driving from Dusseldorf to Luxembourg in the 1970's. The driving around Koblenz and Luxembourg were great. Both of these are less than a days drive from Calais. Unfortunately the Alps and the Pyrenese are where the really great driving is.

Last year, in my summer holiday, i went on vacation to belgium and drove around a lot in the Ardennes around Spa/Francorchamps. On one day i did a daytrip to Luxembourg city. I just entered Luxembourg city in the GPS and set it to "avoid highways". The strip took twice as long, but it was well worth the extra miles (and a lót of extra fuel smile).

No need to go far. The roads around Reims and champagn country are superb.

The food and wine arent bad either.

I have to agree with keesjankarel, just wing it and see where it takes you? I have just done a drive from Barcelona to Rye, East Sussex. First part of the trip was just mile after mile on motorways, once I got to Clermont Ferrand we went off the beaten track.

We went up a volcano? 1st for me. Made even better when it snowed.

Little bit more concentration required on untreated roads at -4 at 08.00 but it added to the fun.

Around 3am on a very cold A75 (E11) heading north towards Clermont Ferrand.

Just go and wing it :-)
