After the success of my little trip down to wales this past weekend i have started to put in motion some serious driving plans for the next twelve months. Details still need to be thrashed out but here is what i have in mind.

March 09': Trip down to the south of France to see my sister who sails luxary boats for stupid rich people. B+B provided on a 2.5 million pound Boat. 8 day return trip taking in some roads and sights on the way. Thinking 2 nights with sister, 5 in hotels on way there and back..... (gives more detour time you see)

April 09': Run down to the Ring/ Green Hell 72hrs of madness... Friends welcome

June 09': Le mans. Enough said...... With you lot!

July 09: Italy.... too many roads to list Col de turini* (probably spelt wrong)

Aug 09: Back to the Ring, again all welcome...

Sept: The North, all the way up the west coast of scotland..... See lastest Evo for idea of plan... Then down back into Wales for the evo triangle, down to elan valley.

I will up date or start new topic when i have more specfic details. But what have you got planned, anything nothing? I read a old REDLINE (i know shame on me) mag on the sh!tter earlier and the editor had a big rant about just going for a drive, Enjoying the road the car the thrill of driving (defo ripping off EVO) Its very true, nothing beats it.

I did a trip last summer down to Monaco. The write up and pics are here

The roads were absolutely amazing.

This year I am off to the 'Ring to watch the 24 hour race and apart from that just lots of time up in Mid Wales on my favourite roads. Going to venture further north this year to the Triangle as well.

Would also like to go to the Isle of Man for a weekend.

I've got two planned so far.

The first is more sedate. I'm hiring a motorhome next month for 12 days and going north. The idea being to just go and drive wherever interesting looking roads take me. I've got a few places i'd like to see along the way (Aberdeen, Skye, Lewis&Harris) but other than that I've only booked the van and the first and last night's sites, the rest entirely depends on where I go each day.

The second trip will be from England to Italy and back in June, via various bits of europe over 2 weeks. Either borrowing Dad's Honda or taking my BMW if i can stomach a "James May in Aston Martin" style 5000 miles.

I'm planning:

  • an Isle of Mann trip to compensate for missing out on a couple of 'Ring trips (due to £:€ rate mainly)
  • at least one to the 'Ring, but for at least a week (i.e. two weekends) so that I'll get some 'quieter' days
  • plenty of 'spur-of-the-moment' trips into North Wales
  • a couple of longer, camping trips through Wales in the summer
Other than that I'll be busy marshalling most weekends, but it'll all come to naught if/when the work dries up.

Only two so far:

Late Feb: Down to an event at Llandow (circuit in South Wales) and probably round the Brecon Beacons the following day.

June: Le Mans (with work, but I think I can justify bringing the tiv if we're travelling light!)

Beyond that... not sure. The North East looks tempting after browsing this month's Evo.

Will probably go to Wales a fair bit, going in February for 3 days starting in Elan Valley, mountain road to Aberystwyth, north to Barmouth, Anglesey, Betws-Y-Coed, Evo Triangle, Horseshoe pass. Off to do some photography.

Might go to the lakes a few times this year.

At a push just a trip to Northern france with friends, would love to go to the Isle of man but can't justify the ferry prices.

Oh and Scotland but its about 9 hour drive! frown

I am getting an Austin Heeley 3000 for a few days in Cornwall, need to plan a route however.

Back to the Elan Valley

Black Mountains

Going to give Buttertubs a try too possibly in May

I then hope to go back up to Scotland to find somewhere to get married (via Applecross)

Should be a good year!

Thinking of doing Britain this year. Have done a fair bit of Europe and now that petrol's well over a quid a litre in France etc and beer's the equivilant of 6 quid a pint! I think I'll give my own country a whirl, as I've actually driven very litle of it...

What date is that in Feb Chris? Only I'm planning a trip down to the Elan/Breacons on the weekend of the 21/22 feb and have heard there's a rally on over that weekend?

With regard to justifying the ferry prices to the iom, there are is no speed limit when you see the NSL sign! What more justification could you need? smile
Awesome roads if you've never been, I'm looking to do a trip over late this year with the family in tow.

The 28th... going down to a sort of corporate open day thing at the circuit. Well, that's the excuse, it's mostly justification for me and a mate to find some decent roads.

Hoping to do this myself at some point, every time I see that Top Gear episode with the M3 CSL going through its pases over there I'm straight on the steam packet site looking up prices.

Other than that heading down to the south of France next summer, and also toyed with the idea of getting a cheapo ryanair flight to sicily, hiring a car and driving the route of the Targa Florio. And then I found out that my age all I can afford to hire is a Clio frown

3 Months round Europe! Starting in Bilbao then heading south, once i get to the south of Spain following the coast stopping at Cataluyna for F1 then on to Andalusia the onwards around south France following coast round and down to the bottom of Italy then up though the lakes then onto Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium finishing with a huge party in Amsterdam.
Camping most nights or crashing in the car.
One small problem, back in september when i started planning this epic voyage i rung my insurance company (Admiral) asking if they would be ok with it they said yes yes its fine 3 months is no problemo. Now when everything has planned i rang them before i said to work i would like 3 months away on a "lifestyle break" (good ol' tesco) and they said yes sir no problem but you must remember you have to return to England for at least a day once a month!
What kind of crazy BS is that!
I really don't know what to do, thinking about trying to cram it all into one month or buy a new car instead.
If anyone has any advice i'm all ears.
