Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the gritter drivers who've been working their tails off this last week. I travel over a hundred miles a day for work and this may not have been possible were it not for the five hundred strong army of gritter units covering the country in salt.
Thank you guys. beer

Anyone else wants to pass on the same please feel free to do so as a reply to this.

Yes, well done to them.

Shame about these dicks throwing a snowball containing a brick at them though: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7866761.stm

So we've run out of grit. We're an island ffs why not fill the dormant fire engines or muck spreaders with sea water and treat the roads with that?

Suspect another attack of the bean counters ---or "another fine mess you've got us into Gordon " .

Good job we're not in the situation of Holand. With a government like this one we'd be buying cars from Gibbs ,like the Aquada-which are equally at home on water or land .

Depending on the salinity, sea water can start to freeze at -2C. It's been rather colder than that at night recently.

Gritters - I wish there was someone to do the roads in herts. The melting snow water has frozen to sheet ice everywhere this evening and it's catching a lot of people out. I couldn't get back to Harpenden this evening without doing a detour of 30 miles to find a road that isn't closed by a police car. There are people colliding with trees, ditches and other cars everywhere. Unfortunately it looks like people are getting seriously hurt tonight and probably early tomorrow morning too because the gritters haven't been out.

In fact I've been so scared with what I've seen tonight that I'm going to delay the early start to work in the morning until it's safe to do so.

Seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Thank you to the gritters that are actually working and shame on the councils that have held others back. There!
