I have to travel from Windermere to Stamford Bridge and back this sunday, I haven't done this trip for many years but last time I seem to remember it was slow going from J47 on the A1 down the A59 to York and round the ring road but once I got onto the A64 it was ok. So this time I am wondering whether it would be quicker (but yes longer) to join the A1 at J47 travel south then leave at J45 and travel east along the A64. What do you think?
Does anyone do that trip regular? I will be east bound at 9AM ish and west bound at about 5.30PM.

I`d avoid the Northern York ring road - I can cycle faster than the traffic at rush hour. Run down to the A64,Take the A166 to Stamford from the A1079 turn.
I insist you get fish & chips at Thompsons.

Sorry not in the winter seasom - by the way the worst chips I`ve ever had were in Windermere at a certain V J`s - overpriced & undercooked!
Have a good trip.

Do you mean Windermere or Harrogate?

Windermere is down to the M6 J36, M6 Toll, M42, M40 and Bob's your uncle.

Harrogate is across to Wetherby, A1, M1, then which ever route you prefer into London.

Sorry- taking a look at the other Stamford Bridge (!!), if it was me from Windermere I might be inclined to go to Kendal, Tebay, Brough, A66 to Scotch Corner and down the A1 to the A64.

The journey across the A65 can be an absolute PITA!

Do you mean J36 M6 up to J37 or J38? to get to Brough then use A66 to Scotch corner. According to the AA the distance should be 112 and take 2hrs 47 mins,(shortest route) your way would probably be further but give me better mpg as mines an auto and does quite well at a steady speed.
Yes I can see the sense in it now, thanks.

I went the short route to Harrogate then down the A1 from J47 to J45 then east along the A64. Total milage 123, it took 2 1/2 hours from 7.07am east bound and 2.45hrs west bound at 5pm, thats 50mph average and 45mph for the return journey, I think if I'd gone via Scotch Corner it wouldn't have made much difference maybe 15 mins on the return leg(and £3 worth of petrol more).
