what route should I use to go from london to scotland?

I'd just take the A1 if you're in a hurry. Sad but true.

Good comedy. The m6 is faster and wider.

The A1 is ordinary single lane each way north of Morpeth.

I imagine there would be considerable economic benefits
from making the A1 dual c/w all the way from Morpeth to
Edinburgh.

Conversely even the M6 is probably not the most entertaining drive if the OP is looking for a hoon.
