Hi guys,

What's the best way to get from Warwick to Winchester? the AA is saying M40 to Oxford and then the A34, but that junction on the M40 can be horrific!

Any suggestions?

It'll be first thing in the morning as I need to get there for 10, so planned on setting off about 6:30/7 to give myself plenty time.

If you want an alternative, Barford Wellesbourne (The Fosse) Halford Treddington, then A34 through Shipston, Chipping Norton, Oxford A34 bypass to Newbury-Winchester. Pretty quiet for the most part.

Should be easy enough at that time of day. Route through barford is nice drive but isnt the A3400 or A44 a 50 limit for quite a lot of the way? May be wrong on that. If you want to just miss out J9 of M40 you can come off at J10 and cut through to the A34 but this is a small road and often not worth it.

I think your right, the Barford road is a 50 for a chunk of it but it's a nice road. Will see what the weather is like in the morning I think. Cheers guys!

If you want to avoid J9 of the M40 (the A34 junction), but still get onto the A34, then come off at J10 (Cherwell Valley Services) and take the B430 to Middleton Stony and then onto Weston-on-the-Green. That brings you onto the A34, so completely cuts out J9.

Its only 10 minutes on the B430 which is a decent, straight 60-limit road. Its often quicker to do this even when there isn't a queue on the M40.

I would say that if you are thinking of coming down from Chipping Norton to Oxford then you'll be looking at the A44. There can be awful queues at rush hour (anything past 8am) up the A44 from its junction with the A34.

To join the A34 from the M40, just dont join the queue 2 miles out. Drive down lane 2 and merge in turn nearer the junction turnoff!
