Hi all,

I had an accident on a roundabout last year and the insurance claim is dragging out.

Part of the reason for the delay is the other drivers insistence that to exit a roundabout on the second exit (at around 2pm point from start point)he should have been in the left hand lane (out of 2 lanes).

I was always taught that for anything up to and including a "12 O'clock" exit you should be in the left lane and for anything after the right lane.

Any ideas on who is right?

Cheers

Alex

He is. On a two lane roundabout, you should use the left lane for the first and second exits, regardless of their position on the clock.

I'm guessing you were exiting from the inside of the roundabout as he carried around in the outside lane? If so, it's your fault, sorry mate!

If you are still there Alex perhaps you could tell me who is right when I am already on the roundabout and coming around it.
He came onto roundabout just before i got to him and when i came off he hit me in the back door (passenger side).
I was indicating off and he had no indication at all so i presumed he was coming off at my exit into the left hand of 2 lanes leaving the right clear for me.
Does that make sense?

Highway code pretty vague on the subject:

When taking any intermediate exit

* select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout, signalling as necessary
* stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
* signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

Bu**er just noticed it's been moved, and I'm repeating what someone else said.

He may have been driving like a numpty, but as has been said in the other thread, I'm afraid it's your responsibility to make sure the lane is clear before you enter it. Just keep denying all responsibility!

I have always used the 12 O'clock rule too, although you can use the outer lane to go straight on also, but anything past 12 you should be in the right hand lane, regardless of how many exits there happens to be.

On the other hand, it is down to you to make sure the road is clear for you to exit the roundabout, too many people don't keep an eye on their inside, with either a "lifesaver" shoulder check or a glance in the mirror even.

In your case I personally think they were more in the wrong than you, by quite a margin.

I keep getting these numpties who insist that they can take the 3 oclock exit from the 3 or 6 entrance When in the left hand lane. I took great pleasure in gently forcing one off the roundabout into the exit they should have been taking. If they are in that lane they can be overtaken if the roundabout has two lanes. If they hit u behind the halfway point then they can see your car and the indicator repeaters and it becomes their problem as they have hit u from behind.

I dunno, i dont think theres any definitive rule, but i know of at least 2 roundabouts where it is the only sensible, logical, possible thing to do to use the right lane for the 2nd exit.

I was taught to use my judgement and common sense (whilst using the 12o'clock rule as a guide) when choosing a lane.

I was also taught to use my mirrors before manouvering!!
