How far out do you wanna venture?

I would recommend:-

A413, Aylesbury to Bucks. (and back again )quite busy, not too many overtaking places if you are in a car.

B4032, Winslow to Leighton Buzzard pretty good now they've resurfaced a lot of it. usually deserted.

B4012 Postcombe to Thame is legendary if you are on a bike or car. bit short. bends have recommended speed limits, and anti skid surface.

A4012, Leighton Buzzard to Milton Keynes. v good.

A41 is good from M25 to Aylesbury if you want to make progress.

A4146 Hemel Hempstead to Leighton Buzzard, good, but cameras, and quite busy.

B4540, B4541 (incorporating Dunstable Downs awesome view), around the Dunstable area.

B656, Welwyn to Codicote, v. popular with bikers.

Thats all I can think of for now, Im sure others can suggest some more.

What's the road going up over the Dunstable Downs from the A5 just up from the M1 at Whipsnade (J9?). That's one of my favourites round here. Always like driving up there when I've got stuff to think about - find it very therapeutic.

Some nice B roads around places like Sarrat and Chipperfield too. Another personal favourite is the road that goes from the A404 at Chorleywood (M25 J18) down through Chalfont and Latimer to Chesham. There are certainly a few cameras on the A404 now, but I don't think the surrounding B roads have got any.

There is the Codicote one (5-7 miles maybe, good fun no cams), A507 Baldock to Buntingford (9 miles), B158 Brookmans Park to Hertford (10 miles) as mentioned above and you have to venture to the north of the county really.

Hertfordshire is in the top 2 or 3 counties for most vehicles per household in the UK so it is a bit congested really. Even on the twisty routes you may get stuck behind a few sunday driver unless you are on a bike. Any twisty roads are relativley short lived anyways, maybe 3-5 miles. thats about 3-5 mins of sporting driving.

I find Buckinghamshire or Essex much better.

If your coming up the A100o out of London then the B158 Brookmans Park to Hertford is a good choice, from there you can take the B1000 towards Welwyn Gdn City, and if you successfully navigate the ring road head for Old Welywn and B656 through Codicote and past Knebworth House. Carry on and you'll end up in Hithcin form where you can head back to the A1 for a swift blat homeward.

Try exploring some of the side roads of the route as well as the vast majority will simply loop round on themselves...

Having grown up in Little Chalfont I can confirm this is a fun road, but there are a couple of treacherous spots where if you don't know the road and there is oncoming traffic you could come acropper.

It's also quicker not to use it between Little Chalfont (Stony lane) and Chenies. Get back on the A404 instead if you are in a hurry

Study this one before hooning along it
