Hi
I'm off to watch the German WRC round with SWMBO and my son. Staying for a week only 10 miles from the 'ring. We'll be in a Freelander. I (feel the )need to go round the ring one evening but don't wish to embaris myself by being in the way of (almost) everything else. I know I need to keep right on the road and keep up a decent speed but it aint fast. Is there a set of 'route notes' (distance/bend severity/distance etc.) for the ring available for a passenger to read to me.

Or am I being stupid and wait 'til I can take a better car?

Do it. Very little speed is needed on your first lap.

It's not about the car, especially if you've never been before, as said JFDI!

This sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a games console and buying a decent racing game. It will teach you the basic layout of the course. Forza3 is quite good.

No problem doing it in something like the Freelander, just make sure you keep an eye on your mirrors because the quick cars do arrive behind you very quickly! Also, doing it in the Freelander will inspire you to get your S finished quicker so you can take it there!!

Here's a pic of me at the gates on the way back from the MotoGP at Assen last year...

As for some notes, this may help you...

Slightly embarressing confession which I'm still getting stick about but whilst doing my 1st lap of the ring last easter I got overtaken by a local plated VW Touran frown
There's all sorts doing the Ring, you wont be out of place, but as has been said, keep your eyes on the rear view mirror at all times.

Definitely do it, just keep right and treat it like you would a B road at home and you'll be absolutely fine.

Diesel Astra estate (belching smoke) here... paperbag

So a Freelander is perfectly respectable. I wouldn't drive out specifically to do the 'Ring in one, but if you're passing then why not? Just bear in mind your insurance probably won't be valid, so try not to get carried away, you might end up with a bill for a Zonda and the lost earnings of its millionaire owner. Gulp.

You'll be fine dude, they even let coaches round! Last year I saw a proper builder's transit as well. It had three guys up front and even a newspaper on the dash. smile

As said above, take it easy. Drive it like a B-road that you don't know, and you'll have a huge amount of fun, in relative safety.

Oh, and don't time your lap!
