It's probably me being totally thick as my head is full of routes/mileage/hotels/passes etc etc! According to my map and what everyone tells me, The Route Napoleon (N85) runs all the way down from Grenoble to Cannes. When I try & put it into Via Michelin, whatever way I do it, it takes me off the N85 several times onto other roads & then back onto it. What am I doing wrong??!!!

If you select the "sightseeing" option, it puts you on the N85 all the way. For a short distance in the vicinity of Sisteron, the N85 has been re-classified as the D4085 and the D1085. This is happening to all great French RNs. As the autoroute network grows, the strategic importance of the routes nationales is shrinking and responsibility for their maintenance is being shifted from the central government to individual departments.

The problems you are having exemplify why a map is always better than a sat nav.
