Aylesbury to Cardiff, best route on august bank holiday?

afternoon all
me and a few friends are heading to cardiff on friday 27th - sunday 29th august. the most direct route it seems is to head for oxford/bicester, swindon then onto the m4 and get the toll bridge. however i know that by bristol on an august bank holiday will be gridlocked! and also i have just read the evo triangle thread....
now i know thats nowhere near to where im heading but i wondering if we took a different route (a5 to gloucester for example)we would get a different route that wont take any longer than sat in traffic on the dreaded bristol route and with some decent views along the way??

Just a few comments for the M4 access. Watch out for a talivan on the approach to the Severn bridge Toll, 50mph. The old bridge may have less traffic but then it also has road works. There are variable limits between Newport and Cardiff. Treat bridges with caution, talivans lurk there. If you cannot see around the bend treat it as suspicious.
Head up to Gloucester and its not a bad run over to Ross but claggy if granny grimm is out as they probably will be on the bank holiday. You can come down the severn river but its a big dog leg with little gain I would have thought?

Thinks. Could go Gloucester-Ross-Abergavenny-hHeads of the Valley-A470 Cardiff?

thanks for that, is it a fairly scenic route maybe with somewhere to stop off on the way?Head up to Gloucester and its not a bad run over to Ross but claggy if granny grimm is out as they probably will be on the bank holiday. according to aa route planner going gloucester-ross-monmouth-newport route is only 2-3 miles longer than the swindon-m4 route, whats that like??
Doing a basic Aylesbury to Cardiff via google maps give 132 miles via the M4.
Going via Ross, ups this to 134 miles and 28 minutes extra, but IMO it's a much better route, you rarely see a talivan on it, it's much more scenic and much less used.
Ross, A40 and A449 every time for me.

Whenever I drive back to Cardiff from Silverstone, I will head from Oxford onto the A40 and across to Gloucester then either carry on along the A40 to Ross On Wye (a great road!) then down the A40 to the M4.
Alternatively, you could take the A48 after Gloucester. I find this tends to feel a bit slower even though it's more direct.
One final option is once on the A40 to Ross, turn off at Huntley and take the A4136 through the Forest of Dean to Monmouth and then get back onto the A40 there.
I would avoid the bridge if you can.
What time of day are you travelling?

Places to stop. Can't think of any, I never stop.
Anyway, on maps, Monmouth A40-A40 at Raglan (come off the Dual for newport and head for Abergavenny) A465-A4060 at Merthyr (Dowlais top) A470 to Cardiff.
Castle a Raglan is a nice wander around. Take a picnic?
