Hi All,

I’m after a bit of advice. I know this subject has probably been previously done to death, but I’m going to ask anyway. I’m planning on a little day trip to the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give me a few good road recommendations. The only road that I have already ear-marked is the well documented A4069 and ‘that’ bend. I know that there must be loads of fantastic roads in the area, but having never been there before I don’t really know where to look. If anyone has got any suggestions of the best roads or routes I’d be really grateful.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris, there are many good roads in that area, as you say the thread has been done many times! Hopefully someone will post a route, I know there are some nice roads near Bala.

Slighty at the edge of the Beacons, there is the B4560 between Llangynidr & the Heads Of The Valleys road.

I stumbled across it by chance at the weekend. It was a great road just watch out for the sheep! (I think it has been used on either Fifth or Top Gear in the past....it was for a Suzuki Swift Sport road test)

Most of the roads are very well documented on here, but one you don't hear about that often that I really rated was on the way to the Brecon Beacons from the M48 bridge if you happen to be going that way: The B4235 from Chepstow to Usk. Some of the roads south west of the Black Mountains (the A4107 for example) have their moments too.

The second half of this might give you some inspiration: http://chriscarblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/run-to-hi...

The B4520 between Brecon & Builth Wells is a must.

Brilliant road and not much traffic.

Have you got a link to the original Google map? Looks like quite a lot of main roads there. The A40 is okay as A-to-B transport roads go, but it's nothing spectacular - may be a necessary evil for a circular route I guess. Looking at it I can't find a better solution to that bit for the same area, maybe detour up north a bit if you have the time and head back south to pick up the Black Mountain Road:

Can't remember if the A4069 is any good, you might be better off with the Sarn Helen road that runs through Ystradfellte. Don't know what the northern stretch of the B4560 is like either. We did the first bit (very good, but lots of blind crests if you're in a low car) and then took the B4558, which turned out to be a mistake - narrow, blind corners, hedges, bit boring if you're going to drive with any degree of self-preservation. I haven't done the B4520 either (we didn't go that far north in the time we had), but I believe it's known to be a good road.

Have fun, we did:

You need the A466 Monmouth-Chepstow road in there, it's lovely.

Thanks to the tips on this and a few other threads. Going to a wedding in Wales this weekend and have used it as an excuse to fit in a bit of a driving holiday on Friday.

This is the route I've come up with.

Will need to do another 2 hours driving from the end of the route to Newcastle Emlyn where the service is being held on Saturday. Staying the night with a friend in Bristol as trying this from Brighton would be a bit much!

Via Tregaron would be my pick.
The mountain road from Abergwesyn is well worth it
If push comes to shove do it on the return journey.
You may then have time to take a side trip down to the Llyn Brianne dam.
