Purbeck Pootle

On the spur of the moment we decided to get re-acquainted with a couple of Dorset roads this weekend.
A big
thank you to the S3 owner we met on the Sandbanks Ferry on Friday evening. We went to the recommended Shell Bay restaurant (just on the Poole Harbour side as you come off the Ferry). It was so good we're coming back next weekend!
Every time we head Dorset way we try and book up at the Bankes Arms (Studland) and are disappointed to find it fully booked. However, for a little bit more the Manor House is great (but imagine you're in an Agatha Christie plot!) in terms of being friendly and having good food and wine.
We also sampled the Mortons House at Corfe. Unfortunately they try a bit too hard for it to be really friendly, and their idea of "fruits de mer" is more like "plate of fish" and has too little crustacea for my preference!
Also - watch out that your car park ticket (£3 per day) may let you into several car parks - e.g. Studland in the village and the one by the ferry - if you're just doing a day trip.
Anyway - good roads? You bet.
After the toll barrier at the ferry, and if you happen to be (near) the front of the queue - the "dash" into Studland is a great little place for a blast. (Is it still a private road? The toll booths used (when I were a lad) to be just outside the village - you can still see where the road markings were.)
Another challenging little road is to climb up out of Corfe on the road up to the ranges, toward Steeple, Kimmeridge, Tynham and Lulworth. Best done before the road gets too groccle-filled! You can turn north back towards Wareham (past the Blue Pool) and believe you're in another country. Either way you can create your own little hill climb event and give the passenger some breath-taking views.
It's a pity that a couple of 40 and 50 limits seem to have sprung up over the years. But I was as delighted as ever to find that the best roads continue to be Swanage to Corfe via Kingston and Corfe to Studland on the north side of Nine Barrow Down.
Coming away from Wareham, look out for the rollercoaster ride up past Wareham Forest and keep heading on the B road towards Blandford.
So that's the B3069 and B3351 on Purbeck and the B3075 north of Wareham
