Avoiding France!
Discussion
I'm due to go on a road trip in two weeks- ostensibly to Cannes via the Route Napoleon, but since petrol is likely to be short unless things change, I'm thinking of alternatives. In a car averaging 20 mpg I'm likely to have a range from Calais of about 250 miles. Don't want to get stuck in Northern France... I can go North to Belgium/Holland and then to Germany but anyone any thoughts about a trip? Motorways, even at speed are a bit tedious so would like to find some nice mountain/forest roads somewhere.
And all because the French don't want to have to wait until 62 to retire!! Pah.

Ferry to Bilbao/Santander, fun in the Pyrennes, dash across south France and into the Italian/Swiss Alps, then up through Germany and Belgium before nipping across to Calais or get a ferry from the Netherlands.
Alternatively if that's still too much France, just cross the channel and head directly for Belgium then towards the Eiffel Mountains, Black Mountains and Alps.

And the Harz mountains. Planning a similar trip myself for August 2011. Germany is the option I am taking. If the train went from Folkstone - Germany, it would be fantastic. As it is, you need to brave 2 dreaded countries for me, France and Blegium!Alternatively if that's still too much France, just cross the channel and head directly for Belgium then towards the Eiffel Mountains, Black Mountains and Alps.
It all depends on how long you want to take.
I've done the Benelux route then cut across the north east of France to Strassburg before heading down to Switzerland, to Geneve and then on to the south coast.
On the Autoroutes / Autobahn this takes about 7 hours from Calais to Basel.
If you start taking A and B roads you can double up on your hours.
The Hartz mountains are about 7 hours direct east so quite a way out of your way. In fact I drove from Salzgitter (just north of the Hartz) to Cannes and stayed overnight in Montelimar. Think it took about 10 hours to Montelimar and then another 3 or so the next day to Cannes. (AutoRouteBahns the whole way).
