Hi all,

I might be travelling down to Poole in Dorset and my normal route would be along the M3 but who knows of any good roads along the M3/ M27 corridor.
I do not want to go miles out but if there are some nice windy roads and fast straights that would be good.
I shall be joining the M3 at J1 Sunbury.

Thanks

Puggit

Come off the M3 just south of Basingstoke (jc7), and take the A30/A33 down to Winchester instead. You can't get much straighter than a Roman Road!

I've not used them, but you could also consider taking the A303 from the M3, then use the A30 to Salisbury and the A338 to Ringwood.

which direction are you coming from ?

could come down the A31 (Farnham/Guildford), take A32 South at Alton, B3035 to Botley, then pick up M27 to the West.

Hi we will be coming from Richmond-Poole and just don't fancy sitting on the boring M3. I am looking for some nice roads that have some straights for overtaking and some nice bends that i can chuck the car in lol.

A3 - A31 - A32 - B3035 - M27 then.

If you get bored on the A32 scoot along the A272 to Winchester
If you want some better scenery come off the M27 and go through the new forest rather than using the M27/A31 route

A3, A31, M3, M27, A36 - then turn left to go through Nomansland, then follow signs to Fritham and Linwood. This includes the 'straight' at Stoney Cross(an old runway) Pick up signs to Ringwood - A338 to Bournemouth.

Get off at Winchester south( just as you come over St Cathrines Hill, aim for Otterbourne, at mini Roundabout do a right down Poles Lane to Hursley, (awesome fast road) left at the end to Romsey, then take the road to Ower and join the M27 at junction 2.

Some proper driving roads there for you to enjoy.

I would join the A31 further up, junction 4 off the M3 (I think) - join the A31 at Farnham...

Is the A31 mainly dual carriageway?

Scratch what I said, I see you are referring to a different bit of A31.

A35 is quite slow and busy through the New Forest.

And stop off at Lyndhurst and drool over the Ferrari's and masserati's in the showroom next door to the pub ......

Scroll down to view the old runway straight , looks a better place to be than the M3 ....

If you go a bit further west then Zig Zag Hill is good fun. It's right on the limit of width and visibility for having fun on though - great in a Caterham or a small hatchback, but an M5 or something would be a bit out of its depth (and you'd probably never get out of first). The country lanes round there are all pretty good (although narrow in places).

On a different note, and in a slightly different area, the road between Petersfield and the M3 has its moments too.

Some friends in that area keep mentioning Hengistbury Head too, but I've never been there - I think that's more a favoured haunt of the local big stereo brigade?

What, for a drive? The road there is a 30mph residential street and then a big car park at the end.

I can only assume its where the rood boyz hang out w*nking over subs in the boot of a Nova as the car park is a reasonable distance from any housing rather than actually it being a hooning destination.
