Hi

Myself and a few others are planning a Scotland 'highlands' trip next year on bikes - bearing in mind
it's on a bike and I'm a fair weather biker - what are the best months to plan the trip for - guess we also want to avoid school holidays too..

It's pure pot luck. I've been in March and gotten sunburnt. I've been in August and been snowed on. The first time I went to Scotland was for a fortnight in September and it only rained twice. Once for 9 days and once for 5 days!

Entirely touch and go. I was still climbing in snow in June and seen some appalling weather in August inc sleet. Was shorts and tee shirt weather on Saturday though, although fresh snow at the top of the peaks.

You probably want to avoid the worst of the midges too, so I'd be looking probably at the end of May, beginning of June and hope for the best.

Good times to go to avoid the school holidays are May- Mid June and late August-October.

Here on the north west coast it's really quiet between Easter and Whitsun (end May). It's also the driest (this year 0.2 inches of rain in May - 6.4 inches in August).

You can see where I'm headed with this...

However, you know full well that with the Highlands there is no certainty. Wait for the weather... then drive.

ETA (B&Bs are empty in May and full in August)
