Gentlemen, I'm after some route advice.

Due to current circumstances (rubbish) Mrs Graebob lives in Clevedon near Bristol and I live in Milton Keynes. Therefore I will be doing this journey a few times in the coming months until circumstances improve. In the past I've just done A422 to Bicester, then A34 > M4 > M5, but this is fantastically tedious. I also imagine that I'll be travelling there on a Friday usually, so I'd rather take an "interesting" route than sit in traffic on the autobahn.

Any thoughts? Much appreciated smile

I'd be tempted to go from Bicester either in the direction of Woodstock, then Witney, Burford and down the Fosse Way to Cirencester. You could then either continue down towards Chippenham and cut across toward Bristol on the A4, or maybe look for a better way from Cirencester to Bristol.

Watch out though - I racked up 9 points by enthusiatic driving on the Fosse!

P.S. I've been overseas for the last 15 years, so haven't driven the road recently, but it used to be excellent fun.

I live in the area you need to go thru ...

Try MK -> Bicester -> A34 -> A420-> A A338 to Wantage ->B4507 Passed White Horse Hill -> At Ashbury turn left to Lambourne B4000 to Hungerford->Pick up A4

Now that you have had one weekends routes try another smile

(I live in Bristol but visit Northampton or Wellingborough most weeks for work)

A421 to the A43, straight over A43 to Aynho > Deddington > Chipping Norton > Burford > A40 west > A436 > A417 > M5 south to Clevedon. Last bit not a route for Fridays in the summer though.

So A421 to the A43, straight over A43 to Aynho > Deddington > Chipping Norton > Burford > A40 west for a mile or so then B4425 through Bibury to Cirencester. Stay on A429 > M4 > M5. If M5 south is jam packed then more M4 towards Second Severn Bridge, onto M49 then small bit of M5 to Clevedon.

There really isn't a good way of avoiding the M5 to be honest

Also A420 between Oxford and Swindon is a right old plod but as fast as A34/M4 most days (and about 20 miles less if that is important)

Done that journey quite a few times - it's a tedious as you say.

I used to ease the dullness with, from MK, down to the A420, then turn off at Faringdon onto A417 through Lechlade and Fairford, then A433 after Cirencester through Tetbury, then A46 down to M4 J18.

Still takes forever...
