Planning a trip of West Coast Scotland including Skye, Lewis end of May/ early June.
Is this a good or bad time in relation to the Midge.
Planning Applecross as wife was born there.
Any advice Please.

I visit the west coast for 2 weeks at the end of May/start of June every year.Visit all the places you mention. You can expect midges. Use Avon Skinsosoft!

May is, in my opinion, the best time to visit the Highlands and Islands. The roads aren't too busy by then and the midgie season isn't yet in full swing. The worst time is July/August (esp if it's damp) so you should be OK. As mentioned, some folk swear by Avon Skin So Soft so worth taking a bottle with you.

Just a quick addendum to that... Midges in June are seriously weather dependent. Last year we had virtually none in May & June as they were both very dry and sunny. July was the worst midge month I've ever known as it was still and damp for weeks.

So checking out the weather before you travel will help you decide what clothes to bring in more ways than one! You can buy Skin so Soft in Shieldaig (it works, but you need to use a fair amount) - I don't think they sell it in Applecross since the shop closed.

All you ever wanted to know about the Highland Midge on Mrs Get's site: http://www.ionalister.com/midge.htm

Thanks for info and great link.

I have another couple of questions relating to Applecross and surroundings. Would you mind if i mailed you as you appear to be one of the most informative on the area.

Cheers Neil
