Hi all...

On my way up from Medway to Leeds in a few weeks. Planning to go in the evening to avoid the various rage inducing phenomena that seem to occur on the M1...

Anyhow, I was thinking of maybe taking a little detour for an hour or so off the the Peak District and take in some more interesting roads; all the while still (in a roundabout way) heading for my destination...

I have been to the Snake Pass before but in a Transit and not driving so wasn't really the same smile and was thinking of taking that in, unless of course any of you can suggest any better roads in that wonderful part of the world...

This Route?

Maybe leave the M1 at J26 and take the A610 and pickup the A6 at Cromford. That way you get to drive through Chatsworth (turn off A6 @ Rowsley), then A623 from Calver to Chapel and then loop back via Winnats and pick your original route back up @ Bamford.

Thats a massive detour, time wise.
I could understand it if you were going in daylight becasue it is utterly beautiful, but if you are doing it for exciting driving I wouldn't bother if I were you.
Even at night there tends to be a fair amount of slow traffic on those roads and they are so twisty along a lot of it that you just can't judge where to overtake in the dark so you either end up taking silly and stressful risks or you sit at 30 mph behind someone angry at yourself for bothering.

That route is a good start, but I've changed it slightly: http://www.bing.com/maps/#Y3A9NTMuNjM5OTEzMDc5ODg1...

This route takes in the A6024 Holme Moss road (Woodhead to Holmfirth) which is a big thing you're missing out with your original route. Holmfirth is also a nice town and then you can head back over to the M1 and join at Wakefield.

Cheers Chriscoates...

Just trying to fine tune the first stint up to Nottingham. Might have to go over to Winnats Pass too (need a picture of it; long story to explain why smile.

Anyhow, going to be up there around 6 p.m or 2a.m depending on how things go at work that day; just hope people don't ruin it for me!!!

This is true, the view from the B6105 across the reservoirs as you descend (you are on one side of a steep valley at this point) is spectacular and it's actually an idea to slow down and have a look.

I've never driven across the Peak District. How do people reckon it compares to somehwere like the Yorkshire Dales or the Black Mountains?

Definitely do this. Consider also heading north after Holme and going via Meltham towards Saddleworth Moor and taking the M62 across back to Leeds.
Those moors around Junction 22 of the M62 are pretty impressive if you've never been on hilly moorland before.
