Hello,

I am planning to do a 7 day driving holiday and wanted some advice and suggestions. The route I am taking is the following:

Day 1: Frankfurt to andermatt
Day 2: Andermatt to Innertkirtchen to Gletsch (through Furka Pass) to Airolo (through St. Gotthard Pass) and back to Andermatt.
Day 3: Andermatt to Bormio, Italy through Oberalp Pass, Tamins, Thusis and Silva Plana.
Day 4: Bormio to Stelvio Pass to Stelvio and back to Bormio
Day 5: Bormio to Constance through Fluela Pass
Day 7: Constance to Frankfurt

I wanted to know if anyone has done this route before and whether you have any suggestions of driving roads/scenery near by to these places/routes. Also, is this route too tiring? I plan to drive a maximum of 4.5 hours in a day.

Thank you,

Rahul Jacob

1st Post and a good Alpine adventure, I have done all of the above many times, you have a very good route with just some fine tuning
Day 2 What you are doing the called the Andermatt loop, which is a brilliant day in the mountains,
Here is the google map bible of passes http://goo.gl/maps/nFtx
You can easily add Reichenbach Falls ( Sherlock Holmes death ) to the day and also Oberaarsee Glazier at the top of the Grimsel ( biggest drop of a road ever )

Day 3 is a great day also but you have choosen the Julier Pass to St Mortiz which is a traffic jam try the Albula Pass just north ( better pass)

Day 4 Stelvio day in a car get going early, full tanks of fuel and do Stelvio, Ofenpass, Bernina and Gavia

Enjoy ..

Excellent advice, but don't forget the Umbrail pass leading to Stelvio. Absolutely superb.

Or try the Mortirolo instead of the Gavia

I tried using the Furka and Grimsell passes in mid June 5 years ago and both were closed. So it's worth checking passes before setting off.

Very useful site for checking pass status

Most winter closures seem to lift April/May time
I'm hoping global warming will sort the others for the end of May wink
