Driving from Petersfield area (A3 Hampshire) to Banbury on Monday to meet a friend for a pub lunch.

Any good roads to take in instead of the A - B option? Good petrol head pubs as well for that matter.

The Newbury Wantage back road is fab, the A417 has a OX CC 50 zone on it but we all ignor it, no camera or scameras here ...

Take Bell Hill up past Steep, then turn right on to A32. At Alton join the B3349 and follow until Wellington Country Park where you should join the A33 to M4 jc11.

The A4074 is a great road from Reading to Oxford, but tends to be busy which really ruins it. You could use the B481/B480 up to Watlington, but there are no overtaking spots if you get behind someone. Or follow the M4 to the A34 and use the route above.
