Newcastle to Ijmuiden to Salerno

Anyone done this route or anywhere in Italy from Ijmuiden? Via Michelin site gives it at around 1185 miles and I would be interested in the views of PH'ers with regard to expected times, where to stop off/divert/places to stay/good driving roads/diversions etc.etc.
Plan is to make this leg two of a trip from Orkney to Cyprus via Grimaldi Lines from Salerno to Limassol (6 days on freighter). I'm having a job convincing the missus that it will be an enjoyable trip, though comfort will be okay in the Jag and I'm sure the views and sights will win her over.
Any tips?
