Convertible Bangernomics
Discussion
I got bored one afternoon a few weeks back and decided to look for cheap convertibles close by on autotrader. Ended up finding a bargain of an MX5 which had been under a cover for 4 years a 1990 Eunos Roadster for £700 but with a hardtop as well which hopefully in the winter should fetch £350-400. The seller also put 12 months tax on it and had to put new springs on it as it failed the first time.
The car is mechanically perfect but the paintwork was faded like all red mx5's do. I couldnt justify insuring 3 cars with the Porsche and the Mondeo already costing quite a bit at my age so I managed to get my dad insured on it for £160 on a classic policy giving his lease Scirocco a break having gone over the mileage allowance. In the last month he has covered 2500 miles averaging 37.2 mpg and getting just over 300 miles to a tank. So its been awesome summer motoring for him so far. I have had a good drive in it a few times and I can see where all the MX5 rave comes from it may only be a 1.6 but boy is it fun in the corners. We put a soft top roof on at a cost of £145 as the other soft top was very tatty.
Any way heres some pictures... amazed how its turned out after 5 hours work including a clay, mop with g3 compound, SRP and collinite wax a potentially £445 car with only 60,000 on the clock and not even a parking dink on the bosy its immaculate.
when we went to pick it up:

After its mop:

No the Porsche hasnt gone... It has been at fearnesport having the things that were picked up at the PPI rectified I got it back on Tuesday will be updating that thread soon
As that was away at the garage I had nothing to spend time on so was searching the classifieds thats when I found this MX5. I was lucky finding it as I rang regarding a white one that was up cheap that had sold. The woman said that her dad had one that he might sell that hadnt been used for a few years so I went straight over! if it had been advertised I would most likely have missed out.

small update...
well sold the hardtop for £350 last week meaning this is now a £495 car! My dad has covered 4800 miles in it without any trouble whatsoever... Out of all the cars I have bought this has got to be one of the biggest bargains... Plan is to hopefully get some coilovers on it in the winter and get a few track days in summer 2012.
